Cheapest way to replace the battery
I have an 08 e92 and the batteries starting to go... slow clock.
Well Tischer sells the battery for 215$ but can't ship it because it's considered hazardous material. What are my other options? And can someone please explain to me how the new battery needs to be "registered to the car"? I understand there is a tool to do it yourself, but would it be cheaper to just have the dealer do that? Could someone send me a link of where to buy this tool? Thanks! |

hazardous materials can be shipped and are shipped everyday. they must go ground, be packaged for their hazard, labeled per DOT standards and declared to the shipping company. a lot nastier stuff than a battery gets shipped every day in the US. Tischer obviously just does not want to deal with it. Have someone local pick it up from them and ship it to you.

If you get a coding cable, the registration DIY can be found easily on these boards and the software shouldn't be too tough either (look for coding software, same package). The dealer will overcharge for this, but that's definitely the easier option, especially if you don't already have the $100 coding cable, though that can come in handy for other stuff and future battery replacements too.

The Deka East Penn battery in the link below fits and works perfectly. Deka East Penn was an OEM supplier for BMW. Go to a dealer or independent shop for the battery registration.

If you have a trickle charger, see if you can charge it back up. I don't drive my cars often so the batteries get tired quickly to the point of slow cranks during startups. 2 days on the trickle charger seems to recondition it and brings it back to normal for me.

You can also get a Sears AGM battery that will work just fine. 175 bucks. Pay the dealer to register it or get the cable and do it yourself.

hmm, I just want to learn more about the battery. Fsarc indicated that the Deka battery is exactly the same but the ah rate of the Deka is at 95 with a cca of 850. Isn't the oem battery at 90ah and 900 cca? Does that mean we have to register 'and' recode the car if we get the Deka battery?

Great thread. I have an '08 that I'm sure is going to need a battery soon.
But really, is it necessary to make this process so complicated? I just can't see this being anything but a money maker for the stealer. Unreal. |

A little OT, but does anyone have a source for the coding cable? Thanks!

Mine was throwing discharge warnings last year. I put it on a trickle charger a couple times and it was fine after that. Same time period this year it did it again, so I am trying charging it again. If it doesnt work I guess I will have to pony up for a new one.
