2014 Corvette Stingray (Z51 3LT (7MT)) extended test drive

There have been several reviews on this site about the new Corvette but I thought I’d quickly share my experience from earlier today. So… I got to drive a friend of mines new Z51 3LT (7MT) Stingray this afternoon for about 45 minutes of spirited driving. My friend encouraged me to push it so I did. Wow! Just…Wow! It’s a blast to drive. I don’t remember the last time I was in a stock high performance car of any kind that delivered power like this car. In sport mode (DSC off) it will easily break the back tires loose in the first 4 gears. It’s very light, nimble, and just ridiculously fast.

I’ve never been a Corvette guy but this one has certainly made me reconsider buying one. You can read and read and read about this car but until you drive one (and really drive it hard like I did) you won’t be able to truly understand. I think everyone can agree that this is the best looking Corvette ever (outside and in) but the performance of this car is what really surprised me. As I said…it’s ridiculously fast and sounds amazing but there is a lot more to it. Once you get past the adrenaline inducing torque and acceleration the car simply handles and feels great. Surprisingly great. The seats are fantastic, the steering feel is very good, and it handles really well on stock PSS tires. It’s very stable and planted at high speed and in nice sweeping turns although it would be even better with a lower racing suspension. On some quicker S turns under power it occasionally felt a bit “wormy” (like new tires, although these had 1000 miles on them) but I think that may be because it sits up a little too high in stock form. The weight distribution of the car also feels right. I’m sure some of the computer wizardry was at work… but it feels like it’s 50/50. The manual gearbox and clutch also felt really good to me. The shift pattern was a bit closer together than my 6MT but all in all I loved this gearbox. The engine was very smooth when cruising so much so that you can be running down the highway at 75 mph and not even realize you are still in 4th gear. I can go on and on but if anyone is in the market for a 2-seat purpose built sports car…you need to drive this car. I can only imagine how scary the Z06/Z07 will be.

With all of that said…do I like it more than my Dinan modified and daily driven M3? Yes and no. For pure performance the Stingray is hard to beat (although my M3 would probably handle better than the stock Stingray on the track and perhaps could stay with it)…but on the other hand, it’s just not practical for me at this point. IMO the Stingray is in a different category than the M3. I’m just not a buyer in that category… yet.

It's beautiful because not only does it look like a Corvette with tasteful tweaks but also everything you see on the body(and beneath) is actually functional. Form following function or something like that. I love it and the Stingray for this and many other reasons.

Yeah, this pretty much echoes my own views of the car. It is an amazing car and a ton of fun. If you don't need 4 seats and if you don't care about a badge (i.e. you don't need a Porsche or similar badge) for ego, it just can't be beat IMO.

P.S. The car can be lowered on the stock bolts (which I have done) and on track suspension mode (assuming it had MRC), it is incredibly firm and planted. It would take an awful lot of after market work on an M3 to achieve the same thing (although it could easily be done).
