Issues

hey guys i have a 2009 DCT e92 m3 with 72,xxx miles on it. Ive been having some issues with it lately that is making me concerned. The problem i am having is that the car will rev up and down anywhere from below the 500rpm mark all the way close to the 1k rpm mark during idle. When the car is doing this the car is obviously shaking a bit and can definitely feel it if you are sitting in the car. It feels like the car is revving a bit like i am gassing it lightly and letting go which can be a very annoying feeling. At first i thought it was the bass in my music until i muted it and watched the rev meter. Almost feels like the car will stall out. What has me concerned is that this used to happen to me a while back when my car had about 50k miles on it, only at that time the car would at times actually stall out and i would need to turn the car back on. This was fixed by bringing it into bmw, they said it was a "fuel breather" that went bad and they changed it out for me. After the part replacement i have never had the car "rev hunt" or stall out until now where similar symptoms have arose.
My question is has anybody encountered this and had it fixed? Is it possible the same fuel breather went bad after only about 20k~ miles? People have told me it can be due to bad gas but this has happened for about a month now on and off because it obviously does not happen all the time but most of the time. After reading all the horror stories with rod bearings, i am getting really concerned. I also dont have too much hope for my local bmw service center so if anybody can recommend a great body shop in the ny area that would be really helpful.

2) This is actually another question and slight concern but when i rest my hand on the dct shifter (not paddles) and about to merge onto a highway and start to accelerate i sometimes feel like a "click" or "clunk" on the shifter as if i can feel it going into gear? if that makes sense... was wondering if anybody has every experienced this ever? Brought it up one time at the bmw service center and they just looked at me like i was crazy... lol

3) Also when i am at a red light and have the brakes pressed waiting for the light to turn green, very rarely the car will jump slightly forward, this is also hard to explain but it feels like you are getting a "love tap" bump from the car behind you. This has happened ever since i had the car, happens rarely but all these little problems or "issues" are really starting to worry and annoy me...

4) I know these cars were known for clunking differentials so i wont expect a fix for this but would like to know if this pretty much the norm with you guys. When i accelerate from a stop at times i will feel the back end of my car ( i am guessing the diff) clunk hard. Most of the times if i am driving, let go of the gas and then gas it again quick then i would feel this clunk. At times it feels like i might break something?...

Sorry for all the tedious questions but after almost 4 years of ownership i am starting to worry if any of these are serious issues, plus would love some extra information before i attempt my luck at the service center and have them tell me "we cant duplicate the problem"

Thank you so much in advance guys!

I can only comment on 4

4) My car has been doing the same thing on and off since April. When I took my car to the dealer back in April they said this was normal (yah right, maybe for SMG transmission).

Anyway it's back at the dealer again today for an alignment and once again I have conplained about the DCT banging into gear (sort of feels like I was rear ended) but only after a dead stop and not all the time.

I have requested the lastest software update for DCT but I have a funny feeling they aren't going to do anything. I will post an update after I get the car back.

I hope you get your issues resolved soon.

1. Lopey idles are generally the result of a vacuum leak.

2. The paddles do have an audible engagement sound. Many people like that. Go drive an Audi and you'll understand why it's a good thing.

3. I suspect this is related to #1.

4. Clunking differential is not normal. A slight whine is, which is why the diff fluids were revised to include a friction modifier that quiets it down. There are some folks that had differential failures and reported a similar symptom to what you describe: http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=441119

Thanks for the reply...

2) This is actually when my hand is resting on the dct shifter NOT the paddles. And only seems to happen when i am trying to merge on the highway and accelerating, i can feel a click or clunk like feel when my hand is resting on the shifter.

4) I have had the diff changed out for a new one early on in my ownership and also had the "fluid" changed out to the new one and still the same clunks as such many many miles later...

Sounds like you need to go back to the dealer and have them check out the diff again.

question my car is out of the warranty but the car is CPO is this something that will be covered under that? Any out of pocket expense i would have to pay for dropping the car off? Sorry havent dropped it off since my warranty ran out. If i had the diff and fluid changed around 20k miles and its been making the same clunking noises ever since what could it be?

1) Could potentially be an ICV issue.

Not to your post but I just picked my car up and they did in fact update the DCT software. it's really to early to say for sure but it does feel smoother. Only time will tell if the bang has been fixed too.

What is an ICV issue? Any suggestions guys?

Also the diff clunk usually happens when i am braking and coming to a stop or sudden acceleration. If that makes any difference lol...

Re: #2 - I've noticed the same occasional click/clunk while resting hand on
the shifter from day one, especially when accelerating. I was initially
concerned and asked BMW service about it and they said it was fine.

DCT has it's quirks (like when rolling in to a stop light from 5th with abrupt
lurch down to 2nd) but overall it has performed extremely well.

my car shares problem 2) with yours. in addition, after this "click" is heard/felt - on some occasions - the dct shift lever's light glows brighter than the sun, and then back to normal again.

can't be bothered to give it to the dealer. they'll keep the car for too long and won't do anything about it.

Thank you so much for the information guys. I am just trying to figure out what i should do next to try and see if i can any of these resolved... I am out of warranty but the car is under CPO, do you guys recommend i bring it to the dealership? Or should i find a reputable outside shop? Reason why i ask is because i dont have too much faith in our "service departments" unfortunately..

really? does it happen in situations like when you are merging onto a highway? I know it sounds like an odd situation.

I've never really taken note of the situation because it wasn't a big deal to me. Kinda like feeling the brake bump when you have the wipers on and your foot on the brake..............Phil
