New Battery Question

So I have searched the Forum and found multiple topics relative to my problem, however they all seem to be inconclusive and not giving very clear answers.

**Plain and simple; my battery died this morning. It's likely the same battery that was in the car when it was brand new. I am considering the OEM E9x M3 battery, OEM Mini/CSL battery, or an off the shelf auto parts battery.

Admittedly, I am not very well versed on the pros and cons of each, so I am hoping to get some feedback and opinions of those of you that have either also considered these options, or even those of you that are running a non-OEM battery.

My car is my DD, so I think it's important to take that into account. Also it has keyless entry, etc..

Any help is appreciated!!

Well, ended up just buying an off the shelf battery from AutoZone for $185.
That's $100 less than what the dealer was asking

No cons with going aftermarket.... after extensive research on this forum (surprised you didn't find anything during a search / browse) you DO need to perform a battery reset method in your ECU - otherwise your alternator may / will overcharge your new battery and decrease it's lifespan.

Thanks. yes I am aware of the battery reset. I will be getting that done shortly.

If you bought an OEM replacement I was going to tell you that you could use BMWLogger to do a battery registration but it also depends on you having a cable. The software is free to do that.
You're lucky you have a lot of options in So. Cal!

I tried on my Mac with the Mac version and it would not detect the cable
I tried with VMWare on Mac and it connected with the Evolve drivers but it would not read any error codes and the BMWLogger software gave a communication error.
I then tried to load the Evolve interface and had it running and communicating, then fired up BMWLogger and same issue with the communication error.

See if someone near you has a cable or go to EAS. You might want to contact Alex@Alpine to see if he's local and can do it

Will the alternator in our cars ruin the lithium ion battery? This area of automotive discipline is foreign to me. I'm assuming by retrofit, you also mean to change out the alternator?

Thanks for the help guys. So I ended up going with the 850CCA Duralast battery from AutoZone and had it coded today by Tom@EAS. Very simple process and he even re-coded the options that were erased by the battery registration. EAS is the best! Highly recommended

Li-Ion battery will cost an arm and a leg, not to mention that retrofitting it would probably be near impossible and not worth the 25-30lb weight loss...
