Decent but probably not the easiest first car to learn on. I personally came from Porsches and Japanese transmissions so the M3 is just average to me

Interesting, this is the way I've always shifted and perhaps why I've had no issue... but I doubt it. Maybe I got one with great linkage and gates but we ALL got virtually no clutch feel.

Mmmmm...ok Nate are you saying you grasp the shifter like putting your hand over a cue ball?

I grasp it like you would the end of a bat...always have...?

My hand/palm is not completely but MOSTLY over the shifter. My fist is at a 10 o'clock and 4 o'clock position over the shifter if you will. Thumb at 10, pinkie at 4. That's how I'm comfortable and have always done it. I'm sure somebody will say I'm doing it wrong.

My 6MT is a DCT.
Isn't the DCT a 7 speed?

This has been a useful thread since I am going to check out a used M3 tomorrow with six speed manual.

The M3's shifter isn't all that great either but at least you can find the gates easily.
I always hated the shifter in my 03 G35. My 06 350z was better but I think that may have had an aftermarket shifter.

My 996 Turbo definitely does not have the slickest shifting but I kinda like the mechanical feel of it.

1st to 2nd has a very notchy(I think that's the choice word) where I feel like I have to exert more pressure than is comfortable to get pop it into gear. This is VERY much the case under high RPMs and it will pretty much refuse until the RPMS fall into the right spot a few hundred lower.

Going from 2nd-3rd, I sometimes feel a slight grind. It doesn't pop into gear as smoothly as the rest. I think this is a result of every so often not clutching ALL the way in but I'm not sure.

My warranty expires in Feb so I want to get a jump on making sure everything is normal.
my car is exactly the same like this and i plan to bring it in soon to check it out. also, i can hear the gear box noise while in the car. is this normal?

+1, I have have owned several E9X and have driven the S2000, older 911 Turbos and several other MT. I agree, the M3 6MT ranks somewhere in the middle.
