AA Green Filter Cleaning

Does anyone know if I can clean the AA air filter with K&N cleaner and oil? I'm assuming it is all basically the same stuff, but just wanted to check.

I would say that it is dependent upon region of the world/visual inspection/etc.

I'd didn't think you could clean the AA filter. I though it was basically the Euro filter?

I am assuming he has the newer Green Filter which can be cleaned and does have a similar cleaning kit line K&N.

OP - contact AA I am sure they can sell you the cleaning kit.

You can purchase the cleaning kit from Active Autowerke or directly from Green Filter. I just purchased this myself.

I think I purchased the filter early 2011. Is there a way to know whether it can be cleaned or not.

What colour is the filter? Is it green? or does it look like the stock one - orange.

If it is the green one it can be cleaned. If it is the orange one you need to replace it.

I just cleaned the filter this weekend...

It is pain in the ass to get the filter on and off the car. The stock filter has a bit of flex in it so you can slip it in and out. The AA filter is so stiff you really have to muscle it to get it to fit in. Took me a good 30 minutes to get it back in the car and I had to take the whole inlet pipe off.

The cleaning process is simple but re-oiling is a pain in the ass as well. I get uneven blotches of green all over the filter and I had to go over it a few times to make sure I got oil on the whole filter. Even then it seems like the oil doesn't go all the way inside the pleats. Also have to be careful not to over oil... Really annoying.

I see no problem in using K&N cleaning kit (which I happen to really like). I'll be doing that when it's time to clean filter, I like their oiling method way more than let's say AFE. Don't know what AA kit is like though.

I don't know if your filter is same as mine (an 08), but my airbox has that little spring loaded pin that keep the air filter on tight. I recommend using just a bit of WD40, as it can be really tough to compress that pin after a while.

As I said in my above post, I'll definitely go with K&N kit when it's time to clean. Their oil is a spray on type. Don't know what AA uses, but I used a cleaning kit from AFE once that sucked. It was one of those that you had to pour the oil, so it was super each to use too much oil.

I personally but new one every 10-15k. Cleaning doesn't get a lot of dirt out and given. We buy these filters for a 5 - hp gain, I feel it's pointless to use one with dirt embedded as I'm sure you lose any advantage. If you use it to simply save money from not buying new paper ones that's different story

I have an 08 as well but that plastic rounded tab does not compress at all. I'll have to look at it next time. It didn't really look like something that moves.

I wouldn't use K&N oil on the green filter. If you look at the Green web site, it says specifically not to use any other oil except original green filter oil. It makes sense as the material of the filter is different on the Green filter than the K&N filter. The filter material is much finer and filters better than K&N.
