Is Your Significant Other Also A Car Person?

I've noticed throughout all of the typically male-dominated forums, that a LOT of guys complain about their wives/girlfriends nagging at them about the car hobby/culture/lifestyle.

Some guys brag about "no wife here"...it's always weird to me that you'd want to pair up with someone who doesn't share your passion (or even hates it!)...

Either way, thumbs up to all the other guys out there whose gals share the obsession and get why we like to throw money into inanimate objects.

And, speaking of...here's my wife's winter project:

And, her daily:

My wife is not car person at all. Has no clue what is going on under hood or anywhere else. Thinks it's magic.

My ex wife liked tinkering with the MK6 GTI we had. Other than that, none of the girls I dated before or after were car girls - unless you count the ones who were in the trunk...

Not my wife yet but my GF doesn't know much about cars. Would like to get her into it but she doesn't own a car herself and rarely drives as we live in NYC.

Maybe teaching her how to drive manual could be a start but that would mean teaching her in the M3...

They should have a certain appreciation for various models as.it pertains to escape and trunk mounted release. A good working knowledge could have saved them.

I remember one time a trunk resident found the release and I had to wrangle the resident down in the middle of my neighborhood.

My wife is not into the car scene as in building or driving, but she is really supportive of what ever I do to my cars and mostly has positive feedback for me! That's good enough for me

My fiancee wasn't into cars at all and hated how loud mine were. Few weeks back she drove my M3, for the first time, to airport to pick me up and had the biggest smile on her face and now wants to get one. She is considering an E90 M3 or E60 M5.

My wife actually learned how to drive on a manual car (her family is a VW family and her mom also will only drive manual...HATES automatics), so she always has a blast when she gets in the M.

Yeah, that's a good meet in the middle. I have a bunch of friends that pull the ol' "my wife won't let me" line, which I just never understood.

I'm in the other school of thought. I think it's good to have different interests/hobbies from your wife/SO.

My fiancee isn't into cars. Kinda don't mind it either. It's just another thing that you can keep your individual identity/personal time with.

Yeah, I can see how that's good if it doesn't impede the relationship, but when it's "ahh, the old ball and chain" "ahhh, gotta run it by the wife" stuff, it seems daunting.

The two things I have to put my foot down is when my SO asks to adopt another pet or for us to buy another sports car! We would be bankrupt if she was in charge of those decisions.
However, we have very very different taste in most cars. It is very rare that we agree upon the same car.

She still has a lot of learning to do though. There has been quite a few times where I've been thankful the car has a strict traction control setup...

My wife is not into cars either but she leaves me alone after I show her the quote from the dealer/mechanic to "repair" the car To her credit she does help from time to time.

I feel little guilty but I use the same argument to justify buying tools (I know I'm going to hell)

Not at all... she has a brand new Lexus and is going to get a BMW next, but doesn't know the first thing about cars.

You don't have to teach her in the M3. I learnt manual by going to a rental car shop and renting a manual car that was absolute garbage. That way, you don't have to ruin a good car's clutch teaching her, and you don't mind mistakes being made on a rental.

Where did you find a manual rental? I was under the impression that you can't rent a manual car in the US.

I wasn't too sure about the US mate. I should have clarified that I learnt how to drive manual in Australia. Rental companies there do carry manuals. If there aren't manuals at rental car companies in the states, then I would ask a friend or neighbour

I have been training my wife for 23 years. She can now spot an M3 at a distance and recently called my cell to report an M6 sighting. She has never owned an automatic car but prefers Hondas.
My 37 year old daughter is another story. She was raised properly and is totally into cars. She takes pride in driving fast to the point of scaring me. She really needs to spend a couple days at M School.

I almost read the title to the thread as
" Is Your Significant Other Also A Car"
Creepy as it may be at some levels, it's also probably true for some of us :-) Especially those (most) of us getting some grief from the significant other on maintenance bills, gas bills, and mod requests going through the "pants-wearer" of the home.
It was tough getting my wife on-board picking up my E90, but she did drive it and was like - "I don't know what the fuss was all about, this drives like my Santa Fe" [grade A eye rolling here]
