One man, one engine ... people are sold
I was walking past a conversation between an AMG C63 owner and a couple of by standers. The owner was telling them how great the car is, and "... inside this hood, the engine is built one one man. That's how great this car is ..., blah, blah blah. I just can't understand what difference it makes at the end of the day, whether it's built by one or 10 different guys.
Does one see any merit to this whole marketing bullshit and how people are sold by it? Does it mean the /// cars, the Porsche and the Ferraris etc., have inferior engine because its a production engine and not hand built by some lonely chap? It was very interesting the way this guy carried on about one man building his engine and how it has got his signature. So does this mean if something blows up in the engine one pursues this guy because he signed the damn thing and he's accountable for things going wrong? C'mon ![]()

Did you ask him how come it takes 6.2 litres to do what BMW can do in 4.0?

I don't buy that BS. I remember the SVT Cobra Mustangs used to do that (they might still for all I know).
it is still a great motor though. totally different philosophy on how to make power than the M3's S65, but fun and impressive in its own way. |

Some people take pride in the weirdest things, I don't go around telling people their wives are really ugly, let him enjoy his prize, sometimes you just have to let these things go.

So you think the GT3's and Italias of the world are stupid?
So let me see, AMG giving you the chicken half-cooked is better? Here, pay me a suitcase of dough and take this hand built jewel, but oh I forgot to tell u if you spend another suitcase you can really get some power out of this baby. Quote:
The whole thing is pure marketing BS, and the amazing thing is you are buying it. I guess it's effective marketing, huh?

Honestly I believe it is all marketing. personally I wouldnt want my car with someone's name or signature on it. AMG engines are hand assembled, they dont make the block, crankshafts, pistons etc. out of hand from last I checked. How many AMG are built in a year? Hardly likely they make it all by hand. Yes it is an awesome motor and the reason why it is down tuned is not because for aftermarket purposes but so it wont trump the higher end models like E, CL etc. Even if it was for marketing at least in the end it gives the end consumer something to talk and brag about. After all he/she did pay for a special vehicle.

It is called marketing, people! Someone is actually annoyed by this? Guess what... every manufacturer does this... including BMW. They all have their little thing to try and make their car stand out in a crowded market. Whether you like the one man, one engine thing or not, it is a great piece of marketing for many people. It also doesn't take away from an awesome engine whether it makes an actual difference or not. Also, whether it is meaningful to everyone or not, it is something about the car that is a little more unique, special, sets it apart a little bit... why wouldn't AMG promote this?
P.S. Don't you find it annoying the McDonald's has this obnoxious guy named Ronald promoting their product. Can you believe some kids actually buy into this clown (not a REAL clown by the way, he's a fraud) and actually buy McDonald's products because of it? How lame is that? C'mon! ![]()

Nope, not at all. I don't know of any other car that I have owned whose engine won an award...although the LS7 in my former Z06 may have (??)...I just don't know. I find the performance and characteristics of the 4.0 S65 engine to be simply marvelous. No fanboi here. Also, I am not taking anything away from the AMG 6.2 engine.....I've never driven one. Only have driven the 5.5. I found it to be quite nice; just not as impressive to me as the S65.

The AMG 5.5 engine is no where near as entertaining as the other two IMO. I'm not a fan of turbo set ups in general. Although it is a VERY fast engine and is easily tuned, I prefer the feel, responsiveness, revving ability and sound of both the S65 and AMG 6.2.

I think it is only marketing , but it is cool. A different subject: The SLS is hand built too.
