Are my head ligths working correctly?

Dumb question. I have an 08 M3 sedan. I leave the headlights in automatic mode.

When the daytime running lights are on, I only see them only working on the drivers side of the car. The two front headlights on the passenger side are not on.

Is this normal? I assume the lights are out?

When the lights are on at night, 3 out of the 4 lights are on. The headlight closest to the middle of the car on the passenger side is out.

I assume it needs to be replaced?

thanks

Not normal. Seems like something is up with the passenger side.

Make sure to turn your steering wheel until your wheels are straight, then check the lights. if any of them are out, you have to get them fixed.

Agree, make sure wheels are straight, otherwise you may be checking with 1 cornering light activated.

Are you talking about the inner most light? That only turns on when you turn.

Do you have aftermarket DRLs? I have Alpines and they have that problem sometimes.

Sounds as if your passenger side angel eye bulb needs replacing.

Yes, inner most light, passenger side. So daytime running lights only work on drivers side?

No, but I'm not sure i understand what lights you are talking about.

If you're talking about the angel eyes, halo rings, aka daytime running lights, then both left and right side of the car should light up at the same time. On each side of the car, there is only 1 bulb powering both inner/outer rings, so if the inner one is not working but the outer is, then I would guess your bulb may be out of position. Once you open it up, you'll see it's hard to position that bulb correctly because the space is right; maybe your bulb simply fell out halfway if it wasn't installed correctly?

If you're talking bout the inner halogen headlights, they only light up one side at a time, when you turn the steering wheel. This is why some posters wer telling you to make sure the wheels are straight... In which case both these cornering lights should be off. Park your car I front of the wall at night and twirl the wheel, you'll be able to tell when they come on and off.

Hope this helps.

Ok just tried again. When i put the light switch in the daytime running light postion, just the two headlights on the driver side are on.

In the next postion, fog light position, just the two headlights on the drivers side are on. In the last position, the headlights positon, 3 out of 4 lights are on, the two on the drivers side and the outside light on the passenger side. The inner light on the passenger light is off and does not work in any of the light switch positions.

I don't see any changes in lights when i turn the wheel

Difficult to say for sure without pictures, but I do think it is your passenger side angel eye bulb that is out. A single bulb takes car of the inner and outer rings on each side.

In the day-time running and parking (what you call fog) positions, the two lights that you say are on (driver side), are you talking about the rings around the lights?

Further, for the directional headlight to work, the light switch needs to be in the "Auto" position. So unless you are in "Auto" mode, the inner lights will not light up when you turn the wheel. Only the outer ring (angel eye) should be illuminated. If your light switch is in auto and you put the car in reverse, the inside of the inner light should light up.

Yes the rings around the lights.

Cornering lights work fine in the auto position. In the second position of the light switch, which i called the daytime running lights, the rings are on but only on the drivers side. Neither passenger side light ring is on, same with the next position (parking lights).

So i guess the passenger side ring is out. Where can i get the bulb and how do i install it?

Thanks for your help

You are looking for an H8 bulb, if you search the form for angel eye replacement or H8 bulb you wil find instructions with pics.

It's not mechanically difficult, but there isn't a lot of room to maneuver.

Might be a god opportunity to swap to an LED set of bulbs...

I'm having similar issues to the OP. When I turn on just the DRL, the passanger angel eyes come on but not the drivers side. But when I unlock the car all 4 of the angel eyes light up. Also the angel eyes work fine when the lights are on when it's dark. So the only time they don't work is when I have them in daytime running mode. It doesn't seem to be a bulb issue since they work sometimes. Anyone have any ideas?
