Question regarding mods.!
question regarding mods:
getting a brand new 2013 M3 and before I do any modifications, such as air intake and exhaust, I would like to know if I should wait until I break in the engine (1200 miles). please comment with your suggestions, Thanks. |

I think you should just drive the car for a while first to see what mods you really think you might want or need. That said, you should drive for about 1000 miles after the break-in before modding. This way, you can really let the car run to its full potential before deciding what you might want done.

The proposed mods are pretty tame... get them now!

I believe it depends on what you want to do with the car. My mods were chosen mostly for track reasons.

Intake can vary from an $89 drop in to a $3000+ Gruppe M. Exhaust can vary from a $500 OEM mod to an over $5000 Kreissig. Best to drive the car for a while first. You lose nothing by doing this, and plenty to gain by making the right choice for yourself. You also have something more to look forward to.

When I was looking to purchase, there were several new models on the lot that the dealer had already installed the M exhaust.
Don't want to burst any bubbles, but, the proposed mods are not going to bring much in the way of increased hp. Both of the proposed mods are simple bolt ons. There will likely be a difference in sound but increased hp is minimal and something I doubt you will notice. For these reasons: why wait?

Wait? Are you crazy?? Better get the crack addiction going now. At least get some painted reflectors to start you down the path of destruction. Then it will be angel eyes, then it will be grills, gills and hood vents, then it will be a tint job, then it will be lowering springs, then it will be intake, then it will be exhaust, then it will be camber plates, then it will be coding a few things, then it will be coding a few more things, then it will be pulleys, then it will be a tune, then it will be the steering wheel, then it will be a lip, then it will be custom paddle shifters, then it will be a diffuser, then it will cost you your girlfriend, then the fun really begins because you'll have more disposable income and that damn break-in period will be over, so then it will be full coilover suspension, then it will be forged wheels, then it will be a BBK, then it will be a supercharger, then it will be a CF trunk, then it will be a CF hood, then it will be carbon paneling on the interior, then it will be a whole new front bumper, then it will be a matte wrap......wait, is the roof CF? If not, better get that on the list.....
So, go ahead and start with the $70 reflectors now. That way you don't have to wait through any silly break-in period, and you can get that credit card warmed up. No harm there----I promise. Oops, I forgot, without the girlfriend, you can shamelessly start spending all your spare time at the track, which of course will set you down the path of track fees, race seats, roll cage, harness, race wheels/tires, a jack, a stud conversion kit, GoPro, GPS lap timer, race pads for the BBK, helmet, race shoes, race gloves, race suit, and then all the tools and gauges needed for the track.....and then of course the car needs a wing now..... ![]() |

If, hypothetically speaking, a street legal exhaust added 50hp, then I would say go for it from day one. Because it adds nothing in terms of power, that is the reason to wait and see how you feel about the stock exhaust so you can then decide whether it is worth spending $2, 3, 4, 5k just for better sound. And remember too, that this better sound almost always come with some degree of drone at lower rpms. The point is that you lose nothing by waiting just a short while, and have really everything to gain. The converse isn't true.

Ah see? You're already solidly on the path to destruction!
And eyeing a $5k+ titanium exhaust will of course complete your journey to the dark side. Hey, I'm already down the path with a blower, BBK, suspension, multiple sets of wheels, track addiction, etc....all in 8 months, so I'm speaking from experience. |
