Question Probably Repetitive Supercharger Questions

Few general questions regarding e9x Supercharger kits in general.

I'm sure these have been covered a hundred times on the forums but I don't have the patience to look for the answers...

Does the engine retain its stock rev limit?

Do prices quoted on websites include install? If not, what is typical install cost/time?

Does the car retain its M Button functionality in terms of throttle response? If so, how is this affected?

Quality, build and reliability... Which kit ranks the highest in those areas? IYO

Thanks for your help!

Does the engine retain its stock rev limit?

- Yes if you want that, its a coding thing I believe. I myself have mine set at 8600
Do prices quoted on websites include install? If not, what is typical install cost/time?

-Figure install will be 1k-1500$

Does the car retain its M Button functionality in terms of throttle response? If so, how is this affected?

-Yes, the car acts the same way as stock and stock with M button activated, just a heck of a lot more power

Quality, build and reliability... Which kit ranks the highest in those areas? IYO

-They are all good, me personally, I have the ESS kit. I would recommend you do a search (which Im sure you have) and look at all the kits and see which kit fits you best. ESS, VF, etc.. they all have their strengths.

Lil Bias eh?

There are several choices from different companies. I suggest reading some reviews on the forum and draw your own conclusion.

Definitely. I'm just now starting my research on the matter.

Up until now, I'd always said I'd never FI my e90, but recently the car became my weekend driver (I now have a company car... Nissan Xterra, nothing special, but great for winter drives in the CO mtns) so the idea of having a little more insanity in my car is not nearly as far fetched as before.

That plus a buddy of mine sent me a very well done video and...damn

OP: GOLFFRR answered all of your questions so I'll just add that it has been a year since I added my SC and I have enjoyed it every day - street and track.

For me it came down to:

1. Quality of SC Kit: and there are several good choices available.
2. Installation support: here too there are several good choices.

Good luck on your research!

Chris

Options and pricing will vary from brand to brand. We can speak for the VF side:

You have the choice of retaining stock RPM limited or raising it slightly, typically @ 8400RPM.

Depending on kit, installation rates will vary. Non-intercooled kits are generally easier to install in about half the time as intercooled versions.

M-button is retained.

That is purely up to the end user and different individuals will have different criteria to meet. We're generally happy with the VF kits and beat the crap out of ours on the street and a regular basis at track events:

Here's a quick in-car video from Auto Club Speedway

Feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions on the VF Engineering systems and I'll be happy to help.

Thanks for your help!
Most people make their decision based on one or more of these choices.
1) Price. Some people are motivated purely by price. Period. New vendors often times give them the kit at half price in exchange for a long winded glowing product reviews. So you can't go based on reviews alone
2) Reliability. Some people look at the number of kits sold, years in the industry, reputation, any blown motors, tuning ability and etc.
3) Performance. Some people buy only based on peformance. Here's
where you need to be careful and also consider (2) above. Also be
careful not to go just on vendor performance claims. Ask for independent results; independant dynos; independant 60-130 times and 1/4 mile times.
4) Vendor relationship. Some people buy because they live close to a vendor or know the vendor personally.

I bought mine based on reliability and performance. ESS has sold hundreds of kits and they have the best reliability record of any vendor, the best 60-130, and best 1/4 mile results -- and have had these records virtually nonstop. So that means they have best reliability and best performance as well.

Good Luck

Best advice I can give if you are looking into doing a supercharger is to spend time talking to people who own superchargers and search for independent performance results and reviews from customers. One thing we are very proud of at ESS is that over the years the best performance results and reviews of our superchargers have not been from us or our dealers but from our customers. At the end of the day that's what matters most to us.

There's more to these cars than driving in a straight line in short bursts, but VAC's time is very impressive, and still untouched.

Our VF-equipped M3 was able to take 1st in the BMW Tuner Challenge @ MFest in the sweltering 107F Las Vegas heat. Cooling is essential to keep power (and IATs) within safe levels on extended sessions.

Official MFest Tuner Challenge Results
1:59.206 HG Motorsports (GTR ALMS 6)
2:01.403 EAS VF Engineering (E92 M3 S/C)
2:01.627 MFest/Rennen Motorsports (Wild card pick, E46 M3 turbo)
2:05.253 STM Solutions Inc (E92 M3)
2:05.440 ESS Tuning (E92 M3 S/C)
2:09.598 D3/Cadillac (CTSV)
2:21.353 The Shop (135 tuned)

The 2:01 was on street tires (still on AD08s). Giving modded GTRs & Turbo M3s a run for their money isn't such a bad thing

sorry to forget the 60-130 list but the other one really doesn't matter if your talking about drag racing its always about ET.

^yeah it is about ET if you care about it. If your just looking to get a perspective on how well the kit performs you take a look at trap speed because it is a derivative of horsepower

Let forget how VAC's trap speed was surpassed on my first run out that day, and I blew it out of the water by 3mph on my best run but ok

Most people when they decide to buy a supercharger based on performance don't care about a driver's results (ET) in the 1/4 mile. If they're buying for power performance they compare trap speed instead.
