Importing From Germany

Anyone import a BMW from Germany? What are the pros/cons?

I'm wondering if the market there is better - more options, used vehicles with mods etc.

Thanks

You mean as in purchase a Euro Spec vehicle and then try to bring back to the US?...also...mods are not cheaper...just because I can get something straight from Eisenmann....or Hamann...or Lumma...or G-Power...AC Schintzer...does not make it cheaper...same goes for OEM BMW....example...BMW Performance Spoiler...420eur...do conversion...~$540...def cheaper to get in the US....

likely not going to work out in terms of pricing. Cars are more expensive there due to taxes, and it's a paperwork nightmare to get it legalized here. But yes, there are more rare colors there, but that's about it, if you search the forums for "Individual Colors", you'll see all sorts of colors offered in BMW dealerships in Munich. Even if you get it here, good luck insuring it, it'll always be a "gray market" car, which doesn't always help it's resale value in the future, b/c I don't think the color is worth that much more.

you can pick up used M3s starting at $35k here.

I'm sure the US military people in Germany who bought from Pentagon Car Sales are taking delivery of US-Spec cars, with some type of agreement that that car has to leave Germany within a certain amount of time, or at least that car cannot be resold in Germany. Plus with those cars, when they come back over, it gets official modifications done upon entry to legalize here in the US, with proper documentation provided to DOT.

Pro: If you can find a 25yr+ car, you can bring back a cool ride (Im scheduled to leave the EU in '15 so a 1990 Alpina B10 BiTurbo 3.5 for example, but who's looking ) without having to go through the conversion process or a major customs nightmare.
Con: Conversion process and customs nightmares.

Us military members who purchase BMW's from Pentagon or BMC are buying US spec cars...these cars are ready to be driven in the US with no modifications to meet DOT regs.

i thought I read somewhere you had a minor work needed on headlights or bumper or something like that, no? it's all done by the dealer when it arrives in US, before your pick up.

Our cars are 100% US Spec. Not even the cool Euro Amber blinkers or Mirrors or PDC front bumpers... All American. We just get to take them out on the autobahn and confuse locals with our red blinkers...

The US MSRP for a base coupe is $60.100
The German MSRP for a base coupe is EUR 68.750,- or $89.918 USD

That should answer your question.

Oh wow this is an older thread. For the sake of somebody else's potential search down the road, I felt this info was missing. Cheers!

what are the rules regarding how long the car can stay aboard?

I also assume there's restrictions regarding selling the car in DE or registering it a certain way, no?
