Something I just noticed about my headlights

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I recently noticed something about my headlight's behaviour that I can't explain. I have a 2011 E92 6MT and the only mod is the Lux V3 lights (5000k).

I was starting my car the other day at a strip mall and got a good view of my headlights in the store window. I noticed that the inner headlight came on with a strong yellowish tint (see first pic). I thought that was odd as I hadn't noticed yellow lights before when I installed the Lux bulbs.

Then when I shifted out of reverse and into 1st the yellow lights went out (see second pic). They did not come back on when I shifted back to reverse.

I read about the lights in the owners manual and couldn't find anything about the inner lights. The high beams are in the outer ones and the beam shape changes when some sort of shutter is raised.

Anyone know what these inner lights are for? Why are they yellow and why do they go out when I shift out of reverse? We have mandatory DRLs here in Canada but they are the corona rings.

I'm pretty sure those are the adaptive headlights used for cornering. They also happen to come on while driving in reverse.

I believe they also come on when at a stop sign or traffic light with your blinkers on.

Why do you want to code it off? Turn the steering wheel and you will see exactly what these are for.

Watch this:

Thanks. Does anyone know what conditions (other than engaging reverse) are necessary for them to come? They obviously went out as soon as I shifted into 1st gear.

They come on anytime the headlights are on and are activated when the steering wheel turns.

That, and it's also winking at a sexy devil in the reflection.

Thanks again.

They are pretty cool. I got to see them really work for the first time this summer when I was up north on a twisty road on a dark night. Very useful but I thought it was the main headlights turning. I live and work in downtown Toronto and am miles away from a street which is not lit up like a football stadium so I don't usually see the effect.

The inner lights are cornering lights only. They turn on when you put your blinker, but the light they shed are like a fog light and will fade out when you turn or after n-seconds of the blinker on. They also turn on when you reverse.

The adaptive headlight is the mechanism that turn on the main headlamps (HIDs) while cornering. This is speed dependent and at lower speeds will only move the right one I believe (on LHD) when turning.

Duplicate entry.. so here is a fact:

Thanks for that video. I'm picking my car up tomorrow so I didn't know the lights were adaptive. Now that I know they are, I will leave them on.

Thanks OP. This answered my question about the inner headlights.

I was pulling into my Garage this evening and the wife said, "Why is your inner light burnt out?" I kept the lights on and looked. Sure enough, the right (passenger side) inner light was functioning while the left side was off.

I started looking online for replacement bulbs and ran across this thread. Def good info to know.

Change the H3 cornering lamp bulb to something like a GP Thunder to get a closer color match to the Lux.
