E92 M3, How would YOU have done it.

The way I see it...

3.5Liter Inline 6 with a 8500rpm redline or more and a 100-150kg weight reduction. SMG3. Optional bucket seats. Ferrari style manettino switch on the steering wheel, with rev counter on the wheel Ferrari style. Multi caliper brakes with optional CC brakes and optional Pilot Cup tires. A button to remap throttle and fuel injection and exhaust from "street" to "track".

The 335 would gain a ZHP or iS version with 340hp and LSD and become a "soft" M3 that we got in real life.

Kept it as it is engine wise but offered two flavours.

M3

spec as is

M3 'Clubsport' package

No sat-nav, iDrive, M-drive
sharper steering rack
19" CSL wheels
Sportier front seats in suede/cloth ala M3 Vaders.

Then, both typical types of M3 buyers would be catered for and you'd catch more people because neither would be as likely to consider alternatives.

I want 9" wire daytons on 145/30/9" Feng Shu tires, Gold metal flake, big chrome bumpers, a chain-steering wheel, fuzzy dice, red shag carpet, leopard seat covers, and I want that whole trunk to be one big woofer!

I havnt even driven the thing yet but I can honestly say that I doubt BMW has built an M3 that is inferior to the previous gen. And, having experience with the previous gen, the new M is going to be an awesome awesome ride and I doubt there will be much I would change.

I'd put in the v10 from the m5.

It would have TWO transmissions, one 6-speed manual and one soft 6-speed automatic both installed so you can have more options while driving.

There would also be a button (a switch would be OK too, but a button would be better) that you could press that would kill 6 cyl and all the advanced trickery so that car would get 30/40mpg. Scratch that, it would just get 30/40 all the time!

The seats would be rigid, strong, racing seats but they'd also be big and leather and comfortable at the same time.

There would be a dial that could change the exterior color of the car.

The redline would be 10,000rpm and it would maintain power all the way to the top.

There would also be a button (again, or a switch) that would make the car go super duper ultra fast.

It would only weigh only 2900lbs and be under US$50k.

M5 V10 motor with an optional CSL light weight package. The light weight package will include manual lightweight seats, optional A/C/radio, all aluminum, 6 pod monoblock brembos with carbon ceramic brake options, and quick steering rack to hunt down the ZO6 at 2900lbs

LOL! The only way to get the M3 anywhere near 2900 lbs is to take out the engine.

Don't change a thing but add a bright red (like the old electric red) to the color palette, and maybe offer body-color paint on the CF roof as a no-cost option.

This begs the question...was it ever really possible for BMW to build an M that could compete with the Z06? My guess is no and I wasn't expecting it but i keep seeing people bring it up. I guess the Z06 has become the new benchmark....too bad I don't like the styling. However, I did manage to drive a lady's who was trying to buy my house in Augusta. The interior felt really cheap but it was fast and I didn't like the steering too much. She kept making remarks about my car about how she looked at them but the M was too slow and ugly!! As such, I didn't sell her the house!!!

2008 base version is supposed to be markedly improved in interior and steering, as well as new LS3 engine. See the blurb in R&T this month. Not for me, though, no matter how much a "bargain" it is.

Start with the 135. Take off a little bit of weight here and there. Throw in the new V8, M-DCT, & LSD (among other things). Boom, just what the M3 should be: small, light, & fast as hell.

Well, for an all-around car, the 1er is just a little small for me. I think the 3 is about the right size for a general purpose sporting car. I'd have used an all-aluminum body (except for CF) roof like Jaguar as the main weight saving technique. Should be good for 125-150 lbs.
