Don't feel like I drive my car hard enough..

The M3 is my baby as I'm sure it is for all of you as well. I love every minute that I am in it and look forward to driving it every day. That being said, I really feel like I don't drive it hard enough because of said reasons. I'm averaging over 18pmg in mixed driving...70% city. They say you only live once, but I simple can't flog on this perfect machine! Anyone else feel this way?

I drive my M3 in a relatively normal fashion most of the time.

I honestly think the car needs to be tossed about and redlined a few times a week - to clear out all the sinuses as it were.

If you don't have the rear end slip out, or see the traction control icon every few days - your car will be sad.

Babying an M3 is like telling a person with clogged arteries, resulting from inactivity and diet - that everything will be OK.

Gotta exercise, eat right, and blow those arteries out once in a while to keep things going strong.

So basically, you bought the M3 just to say you have one.

Congrats.

Hell No!!!!

Look.....I am willing to bet that I keep my M3 in better condition than most people. It is immaculately detailed. I never deliberately drive it in bad weather. I never really use it to haul "home depot" type stuff.

However, I drive this thing hard. Every time I drive it, I will take it to redline as much as I safely can. When the road is empty and familiar, I will push the limits of traction. This car is just so much fun. Then, when I'm done, I'll bring it back into the garage, and clean her up again. I even regularly clean the barrels of the wheels and the insides of the exhaust tips. I coddle her when its time to be coddled. I care for her greatly. But when it's time to play, it's time to play.

How many times have you had it at a track? Seems to me that is where you belong, not on the streets with Moms in SUVs loaded with school kids - get smart before you get thrown in the slammer. I suspose you would complain about being picked on because of the M3 if you got a ticket......and that you are such a good driver.

The fact that we drive a high performance auto does not mean, nor should we be encouraged, to drive it balls to the wall on the public streets.

If you're doing 70% city driving (especially if the other 30% is just highway commuting) I have to wonder why you got an M3. My driving is about 40% city, 10% highway, 45% rural back roads, and 5% track -- and on the few tanks I've had that were almost all city driving, I think I got about 12 MPG (average mileage is about 14.5), so I have no idea how you achieve 18 on mostly city driving. It's not good for a high-revving engine not to be revved highly at least occasionally.

If you don't have any rural back roads in your area, then as others have said look into HPDEs at nearby tracks. It can be expensive especially if you have to buy track insurance since your normal insurance doesn't cover HPDEs, but it's hands down the best way to enjoy your car and learn to really drive, and one of the best fun-per-dollar activities anywhere IMHO.
