Dust Shield Removal?

I have a Stoptech BBK kit on the way which I will likely install myself. My question is should I keep the stock dust shields or not? I think it would be easier to simply remove them vs. cutting them to fit. I also think the brakes would benefit from the extra cooling effect with them removed.

I went with the 4-pot Trophy Sport kit for the front and rear to clear my 18" track wheels. So I don't have the benefit of the larger 380mm front rotors to dissipate heat. I seriously doubt the 355mm rotor up front will be an issue with my limited track experience but I may as well give them the most cooling possible if removing the dust shields doesn't pose a problem.

Thoughts?

When I had my bbk installed - I left them off. Dont have to worry about rocks getting stuck in there either.
Make sure you post pics of your Stoptechs. I was going to do the same thing to clear the 18's but in the end decided on AP Racing. Nice kit - I am sure you will love it.

I just installed the ST-60/380 front and ST-40/355 rear kit on mine. We removed the front shields and trimmed the rears. The fronts are easily removed with bolts.

What's the purpose of those shields? They sure as hell don't stop freaking brake dust. Can't see their benefit, but am sure they must have one; please enlighten me .

They shield suspension components from heat.

Guess just the bushings, no? But is it ever an issue on the streets? I thought the main reason was to eliminate brake dust on the wheels. Thanks.

I would just use tin snips and trim to fit. The factory would not have wasted the time or money to fit them if they did not see them neccessary for street cars. If you are going to strictly track the car then why not. With that said you can run it on the street without shields with probably no adverse effects except increased dust, dirt, etc.

Can these shields be removed without removing the bearing hub, just by removing the caliper and the rotor?

The rear shields can only be removed by undoing the rear brake shoe assembly.

The purpose of the shields is to protect the bushings from heat, debris and brake dust.

Ideally its best to keep them if possible.

If this is going to be a street car with some track events thrown in there I say keep them. If you are going to be under the car everyweekend and pulling brakes off and such then I would ditch them. Malek knows what is he talking about.

What about the front shields? I'm not considering removing them permanently, they would be reinstalled. Just need to know what's involved.

FWIW I ended up keeping them except in areas where they had to be trimmed.

i removed my fronts. all that is required is taking out three bolts on each side, and removal of wheel first i suppose.
