The faster way to stop a car with a modern ABS system is to put maximum pressure on the brake pedal and keep pressing as hard as possible until the car stops - as long as you can feel the ABS pulsing through the pedal then there is nothing more to do. Which gearbox you have is totally irrelevant. Even if you leave a MT in gear its not going to make it stop quicker or slower. Adding extra engine braking is not going to make the car stop any quicker as the rear ABS sensors will already be modulating the brake pressure to keep the preset maximum deceleration level of the rear wheels at the brink of locking up. The biggest mistake you can make when emergency braking is to slightly relax the pedal when you feel it pulsing.
And why it is that its always the newbie drivers that have to mouth off the most about which is better DCT or MT? (as if one actually is better than the other).

+1

With all your limbs involved in driving you have to be paying attention to the road. I find I am much more aware of what is going on in the 6mt m3 than in my auto.

And yes... every time I start an auto my left foot does an air ball into the floorboard.

Would you agree that the likelihood of rear ending someone is greater when driving a 6MT over a DCT in the M3? As someone with about one and half years of 6MT experience, I say yes it is more likely that a driver will rear end someone when driving a 6MT simply because it takes more coordination to stop a vehicle on short notice. Then again, when braking I usually disengage the gear and put in neutral before coming to a full stop. I’ve noticed some people just step on the brake like it was an automatic and then pop it out of gear right before the car comes to a full stop. My fear in doing that is becoming rear ended when the car stalls on the freeway!
You are doing it wrong. The car should always remain in gear until you are stopped. What if something happened and you suddenly needed to give the car gas to get away?

There are many legitimate arguments as to why someone will prefer a DCT to a MT -- this is not one of them.
+1 Thank You! And yes, stick to a DCT since you don't know what you're doing.

More coordination? What are you doing while you're driving? Do you have to put away the laptop, ipod, coffee, cell phone away before you do an emergency stop?

For you, an automatic may be safer.

For the rest of us, there is no difference, the proof point of which is that in the myriad and massive safety studies done over decades, there is no statistical difference between autos and sticks in terms of either number or severity of accidents.

Bruce

PS - Most folks tend to think they have better control over a given vehicle if it's a manual. Reason: They are always in the gear they want, and they know what gear that is.

the concept is you can now drive and eat a hamburger at the same time. So yes, more dangerous, you're distracted and McDonald's will kill you over time.

Disagree and the figures don't lie - In the UK the majority of cars are manuals and we don't have a epidemic of rear end collisions.

You can argue it either way:

A. DCT is safer because both hands are on the wheel and you're focused on the steering, gas, and braking.
B. 6MT is safer because you're more involved and more conscious of your speed, RPM, and gear.
C. Shut the fuck up and stop looking to justify why your choice is better than someone else's
