BIMMERPOST NEWSBMWNA Chooses INRIX Real Time Traffic Information for Next Gen RTTI Service Press Release June 6, 2012, 7:00 a.m. EDT BMW of North America Selects INRIX Real-Time Traffic Information for its Next Generation Advanced Real-Time Traffic Information Service Two Companies Collaborate on Navigation Systems That Boost Fuel Economy While Improving Urban Mobility NOVI, Mich., June 6, 2012 -- INRIX, a leading provider of traffic information and driver services, announced at Telematics Detroit that BMW of North America, LLC has selected INRIX's premium traffic information for next generation connected navigation systems in North America. As part of a multi-year contract, BMW is teaming with INRIX to provide drivers with real-time traffic, traffic-influenced turn-by-turn directions and alerts to accidents and other incidents along their route. "BMW is taking in-car navigation in bold new directions," said Bryan Mistele, CEO of INRIX. "Together, we're shaping a future of the connected car that puts drivers at the center of an experience that's personalized, localized and optimized in ways that make navigation indispensable to the daily driver." Per BMW's recently announced Advanced Real-Time Traffic Information (ARTTI) service, INRIX is collaborating with the industry's innovation leader to integrate "cloud-based" premium traffic information and driver services that leverage "local knowledge" to improve routing, fuel economy and provide more accurate travel times. For example, INRIX's unique analysis of the traffic and travel time of impact of stop signs and traffic light phases on arterials or a major local event like a professional baseball game helps ensure BMW owners' travels are faster, easier and, particularly at rush hour, more predictable. INRIX combines traffic information from its crowd-sourced network of connected vehicles nationwide with insights from hundreds of public and private sources to provide BMW with a real-time traffic service covering one million miles of highways, interstates, arterials and city streets across North America. BMW's Advanced Real-Time Traffic Information provides unprecedented level of insight to BMW owners. Customers will receive better traffic information than available previously and in a shorter amount of time. ARTTI has improved precision and is able to determine differences in traffic conditions down to smaller road segments than ever before possible. ARTTI will be incorporated into the latest onboard navigation system which will be standard on all 2013 7 Series models as well as the 550i Sedan, 550i Gran Turismo and ActiveHybrid 5 Sedans. The new navigation system, with ARTTI, is offered as an option on the 2013 528i and 535i Sedans, 535i Gran Turismo as well as the ActiveHybrid 3. About INRIX INRIX® is the largest global traffic intelligence platform in the world, delivering smart data and advanced analytics to solve transportation issues worldwide. Good to see BMW is finally offering navigation technology that's current, however why make it available as an option across all of the model lines.
Highest Regards.

Whether the F30 3 series gets the new NAV (Navigation Professional) sometime later during the 2013 model year remains to be seen.

As of now, officially the only 2013 models announced to get this in the US (starting July production) are the 7 series, 5 series, 5 series GT, and ActiveHybrid 3 (which actually starts production after July). The 2013 M5 also gets the new navigation.

I'm sure BMW will let this technology trickled down to all their other lines over time.
Interesting technology regarding local knowledge and feedback from users. The new advanced navigation system will likely transmit location/speed data back to this company (hopefully anonymously) to improve traffic and routing results for others. Sounds like similar technology used in Google maps on a smart phone: http://www.techspot.com/news/48015-g...-gps-data.html

I'm not sure what is better about this system. Many of their comments apply to the old one too:
1) Real time (so they say was the old one) 2) Cloud-based (all such systems are cloud based including the old one) 3) uses advanced analytical to find the best route any time of day (that's what they claimed the old one did). Maybe the differentiator is that this is "premium". I hope that doesn't mean we have to pay for this information where it was free on the old system (included in purchase price).
