If you had to choose between two cars......

1. A smaller, lighter, more agile, but slightly slower car

2. A bigger, heavier brutal speed machine

Which would you take based on only the performance characteristics.

I'm thinking along the lines of an M3 vs. M6 or Cayman S vs. GTR, etc., etc.

Definitely smaller, more fun car over mass power and performance.

If you go to the track, #1. If you don't or you need/want more space for cargo, family, and the associated added luxury, #2.

If I'm at the same point in my life, #1. If I have a family, probably #2.

IMO the E92 M3 is 1.5. It is not as agile as a Cayman, but has a lot more power. It is not as heavy and powerful as a GT-R. Somewhere in between.

If I didn't have kids
Cayman/boxster s for sure
But the minute my son popped out of my wife
An M3 is the perfect car
It does everything very well
And it's only weakness, is in snow
Which affects most other cars on your list as well

if you do mostly street / highway driving, there's no use for a 400+ hp car anyway... by the time you sneeze on the throttle you're over the speed limit...
my next car will be along the lines of a Miata / S2000 / Boxster (i need a rag top ) or a Shelby Roadster replica... light AND monster power

For street only? Or, for street & track?

I'd go with #1 definitely. I really like cars that stick to the basics much more than heavy over-engineered computers on wheels. The only exception to that rule for me is the GTR just because of how awesome and badass it it.

I disagree, it is actually quite the snowmobile with good snow tires. Makes it that much better as an all-rounder.

I've used 2 sets of snow tires
Both sucked
One was pirelli 240 snow sport
Current one is Dunlop wintersport 3d
Maybe I should just spend and get blizzaks

#2. I would want a brutal speed machine if I left the M. Not a muscle car but more like an CLS AMG. With that said I have zero interest in leaving BMW.

Diamond White looks good on any Benz. I'd probably go with the slightly heavier more powerful engine. If we're talking weak as in FR-S weight and engine and C63 weight and engine, I'd take the C63.
