Resale Value: 6MT vs DCT

Forgive me if this has been discussed. If it has, I'm sure the moderator will delete this thread. I searched with "resale value 6mt DCT" but nothing came up.

Also, did BMW produce more DCT than 6MT? Is it the same case with the E46 SMG?

Just wondering.

Based on your sig picture and quote I doubt you are "just wondering"

I can't see how it would make a difference. If it does it wouldn't be huge.

Prob no difference in value in the long run years from now, but manuals may be more reliable long term

I think this sounds pretty right.

DCT may be more attractive, but only with some sort of warranty on the car.

Has anyone found out how much it costs to replace the DCT out of warranty?

Currently $11k-$12k as far as I remember, but I am sure it will get cheaper as time passes.
I think 6MT will be a lot cheaper to repair.

In Calgary at least, 6mt's definitely sell quicker. As a result they get more hits and are more valuable. That's only because there are so few of them. This effect is readily visible in E46 M3 sales. Comes out quite clearly when multiple ads are posted.

There will always be a market for the manual.

I would think that the DCT would be more valuable off the bat. Under warranty there are no worries and this is the newest technology. After a few years when cars are out of warranty and BMW inevitably releases an updated DCT I think the current DCT will then be worth less that the 6MT. My guess is that most people will not have the car around long enough to see this happen.

In the rest of the world, outside the Calgary 6MT-zone, the DCT is valued at between $1100-1300 depending on private party, trade-in, dealer retail on a 2008 - per Edmunds.

If you look at the past M3's such as the E36 and E46, the manual is more sought after and commands a higher value.

That's true but the e36 had an automatic and the e46 had the craptastic smg. The dct is definitely on another level compared to those examples but who knows? My bet is that there won't be much of a difference in resale values.

I think people were saying the same thing during the time when the E46 was current and then the issues started coming up when warranty expired. But yes we will see. No one can predict the future, just make informed decisions about it.

This is almost word-for-word what owners were saying about SMG. And look how that turned out. Obviously, DCT is hand over fist better than SMG. But you never know. I think it really comes down to numbers as opposed to options. If there are 100 DCT's and 5 manuals, then guess which will have the higher asking price (like-for-like specs). I'm sure the opposite is true. Like I said Calgary has a higher asking price for manuals because of their rarity. And as someone pointed out to me, above, that probably isn't true elsewhere.

When I was personally shopping few months ago, the DCT cars were asking almost a 4-6k premium over manual versions of the same features/mileage. Granted these were E90s so that may have been the reason.

I really wanted DCT again but didnt want to pay that much more for it. Ended up with a 6mt and still quite happy.

Circa 2005 or so, there was not a difference in sale price based on 6mt vs SMG

Unless you are a die-hard 6 MT guy the manual tranny in the E9X M3 is not the best ever. It has an unique, solid feel to it but is notoriously notchy from 1st to 2nd. Many owners, including myself, have to learn to adjust our driving style with this tranny. I have a 135i also with a 6 MT and it is so much easier to drive. The M3 tranny forces you to pay attention; maybe that's what's fun about this tranny, it makes you feel like you are really, really driving.

Well it all depends on a buyer. My friend just traded his lambo in on a 2011 M3 6-spd. It was hard to find a fully loaded 6-speed. On the other hand there were a lot of Dual clutch M3's with that said I still think that in USA the resale of auto cars is always a bit higher due to practicality reasons. Lots of people do not know how to drive manual specially girls.

My expereince is when it comes to resale:

When you are selling a DCT car people "wish" it was 6M
When you are selling a 6M car people "wish" it was DCT......

However, I have been noticing (in my local area) dealers keep DCT's in stock but manuals will most likely to be ordered..... The appears to be more DCT's available in general market as well.....

In the end, one should buy what they want on such a unique car like M3.

I would consider a SSK. Makes a world of difference.
