M3 performance exhaust and what to expect

Picked up the new exhaust from local dealership yesterday, stock oem is off the car and new one is in place just have to do final adjustments and tighten the bolts 100%.. $4246 dollar later im thinking is it really worth the money??? i dont know anyone who has it!! So i have not heard what it sounds like!! LOL... IM looking for a exotic sound and power. i know im not getting much increase in power from rear section only. But sound is very important!! So before i fire this up in like 20 minutes does anyon e have anything to say about this and i would assume being built from BMW M division the people who built this Awesome car and Awesome engine they would know exactly how to make a upgrade exaust system that = and matches this S65 engine perfectly! Am i right? Thanks anyone who responds to this thread.

You will not be disappointed. It's an exotic note unlike the other aftermarket exhausts and the more km you put in the better it gets. You will love it. It's not a loud exhaust and if you're looking for that you will be disappointed. But it is louder than the stock and definitely has more character. Enjoy and tell us what you think about it six months later. Good luck.

Power? ==NO.
Sound== awesome!

I'm not interested in super loud exhausts, and definitely don't want droning (my other vehicle's exhaust drones -its nice to drive without a drone once in a while!). I really like the sound at all rpms...smooth, no burbling when you come off the gas, with a progressively increasing roar as you squeeze the pedal. Of course under load and accelerating hard it really roars and is plenty loud. I love powering up hills. It doesn't seem load when I'm accelerating hard in the cabin...but people outside the car tell me its loud. Like other exhausts, the cold start is pretty awesome. I hear plenty of rice rocket exhausts driving around and I definitely don't want to sound remotely like those guys.

I'm keeping this car a while, so it was nice to be able to roll it into the financing. Ryan's crew at Steve Thomas BMW installed it on my car which came right off the boat in Oxnard.

Sound quality is very a subjective matter. In my case, I love the M performance exhaust. It strikes the perfect balance between daily driveability and aggresivness when pushed. Perfectly matching what I enjoy most about the M3.

The exhaust is quite expensive though, I am not sure I would have gotten one if my dealer would have not a struck a warranty deal with me.

The sound does get better with time as it breaks-in. Give it some time before you pass your final judgment.

M Perf is great, congrats! Looks very clean as well. Enjoy! FYI, many people do not put the X-pipe together with it because it kills the sound.

Yeap, terrible sound with an aftermarket x-pipe, extremely raspy
Very nice tone with stock x-pipe but dont like the bulky canisters, when I had the perf exhaust I ceramic coated them in black, it looked much better!

Can people chime in about drone on this system? My Remus Race is starting to hurt my ears between 2.5 and 3K

Once borken in, from 3.5-4k rpm especially, it has a really wicked sound, although it sounds great throughout the rev range. Overall, I love it. It's got a hollow, metallic sound to it, and I just love it. It's loud at high rpm, super quiet at low, just perfect for a daily driver. Why this was not on the car stock is beyond me, even if it meant a $2 to 2.5K higher MSRP for the car itself.

13,000 miles on mine. No drone and sounds better with age. Still looks like new too.

This exhaust sounds the same as the modded OEM exhaust (straight through).

According to a BMW engineer, the design inside is the same but the material is different.

Sorry to hear you paid $4.2K, a little shopping around and you could have saved close to 1K. There are dealers selling them on Ebay 3.4K shipped and no tax if your out of state.

Anyway hope you enjoy it, puts a smile on my face every time I stomp on it!

No, it does not sound the same. I'd say they are as loud as one another, but the sound is not the same at all. Granted, the modded OEM sounds great too, and is by far the best bang for the buck at around $250.

They got you on the price but rest assured, you've got one of the finest exhausts available for your car. I've had one for almost a year, tried a couple of "race" exhausts (drone monsters) for comparison. The M Perf is beautifully designed to give an exotic, louder than stock note without any drone. As the other guys have stated, it gains a little more character and is slightly louder once broken in. At about 6 months with mine, above 3K rpm I noticed a nice change.

Agreed, they do not sound the same. I heard both of them side by side. You cannot rely on videos. The M-performance sounds a bit more exotic. The OEM mod sounds great too, definitely the best bang for the buck .

This is totally incorrect. The stock exhaust crosses over, so that what comes in the left side exits on the right. The BMW Performance is straight through.

They have a completely different design. A modded stock exhaust sounds nothing like a BMW Performance exhaust.

The "Straight Through" exhaust mod doesn't cross through the muffler. They cut the pipes and have each side go straight through and bypass the muffler.

The other exhaust mod changes the perforated pipes inside the muffler with solid pipes and still crosses over.

There are 2 different types of exhaust mods.

I suspect the routing of the piping is the same for the "straight through" exhaust mod and the M3 Performance exhaust, but the M3 Performance exhaust probably uses perforated pipes inside to allow sound deadening material inside the muffler to do it's work so it won't drone as much.
