E46M3 ZCP but not E9* ZCP? Why not? I agree with the 1M though due to the limited production.

If they are stock in a great shape, I think that they will be probably be holding their value well down the road. "The last naturally aspirated M3" effect will play a role for enthusiasts I think, with everything from BMW going to turbo.

To me, all versions of the M3 are classic. I still get warm and fuzzies when I see clean version of them. The M3 ages well.

That being said, I don't think you will find that it will appreciate or become worth a lot of money. might to some BMW, but to the collector community, it is very unlikely.

Classic IDK, but it gets my vote.

Virtually every forum I'm on someone claims that the car in question will be a classic. I just want to drive it in the now. The future will bring what it will bring.

Special variants aside, no.

I can say the same for the E36 and E46...but just because they won't be classics (and have the value that comes with it), doesn't mean they won't find a place in the garage some time in my life.

Classic.

Collector.

Not the same.

'65 v8 Mustang = Classic
'65 2+2 Fastback = Collector

Get it straight people.

Classic - sure, why not.

Collector? Don't count on it, look at past samples, how much is a E30 M3 these days? $12,500 max in pristine condition in today's money. A E30 M3 stickers around $32k in 1987, equates to almost $59k today.

I'm too lazy to do actual figures based on CPI-U, but you get the idea. This is why you never buy mass market cars as an investment when they're new.

The most valuable BMWs are:
3.0 CSL Batmobile - 157 made
M1 - 450 made

There were 18,000 E30 M3s made, and they were mostly driven daily.

She is a Classic to me and that is why I drive her almost every day and if it's only a milk run taking the long way to get there and then back home

So which is it?
Maybe?
big fat NO?

The OP's question is recognition as a classic.
There's no mention of "collectability" in his question.

A collector is a car you never drive, what would be the fun in that!

Nice E30s are pulling in good money in the UK now. There has been a sharp increase in their price in recent years.

Here is a unique E30 Evo II cab:

There is no doubt in my mind that any M car will have a following in the future.

Perhaps neither classic nor collector, but valued and driven by a BMW enthusiast anyway.

I have a 79 Eurochassis 323i (with the M20 6 cyl. making an awesome 140hp/140 ftlbs when it was new) in clean condition with track suspension that I drive fairly often, always turn heads, and have a blast throwing around. It has more than 160,000 miles on it (probably far more, but the speedo/odo pickup goes to the tranny, which was replaced at 160k with another model w/ no pickup).

If I find an E92 M in similar condition 20 years from now, it will find a spot in my driveway. Or since next year is the last year of the NA motors, I may buy one new and drive it that long myself.

Will be sought after for the motor IMO. Lines are also classy and, for the most part, should hold up well over time.

So many produced, hard to have a high rating on collect-ability....maybe in 2110 or something ; )

The CRT and GTS will definitely be collectors items (for anyone who can own it without beating on it). Those were made in smaller numbers. The E9x will be too easy to get.

you can collect anything regardless of value, so even "collectability" is subjective. I'm sure there are still people who collect pogs. I'm sure they're worth less than the paper they're printed on. Are they still collectible, sure, why not? You can collect anything.

Cars that become a classic usually have something very special or unique about them, they are usually pioneers that are the first to do something of historic significance. The M3 is good at a lot of things, but does not really excel at anything in particular. It doesn't really stand out at anything. It's just not unique or revolutionary.
its JUST a souped up 3 series? then what else should it have been. clearly you dont know what they did with the e36 m3...that had the same engine from the 3 series line but obviously everything was created in M manner. the e9x m3 is WORLDS apart from the e9x 3 series line. M did a great job and this car def has the potential to become a classic...not a collector. there's a reason why literally this car has not lost a single comparison.
