Can I get pictures this sharp with my Canon XSi or is that just not attainable? (sorry I'm a photo noob)

There's a lot of factors that go into how sharp photos are. The camera to some degree and more so the lens.

But on the web, how you resize and export makes a big difference. I generally resize to 2560x1600 and then sharpen the image in software before exporting the JPG (which gets uploaded to flickr.com). Whenever you resample an image (enlarge or reduce in size), you lose image quality and sharpness so sharpening it back up after resizing makes a big difference.
