In all seriousness, some things are just an expression, but other things are not. I think some people have a hard time determining what is an expression and what is an actual statement. Saying something is mint means it's perfect, it's a statement of fact, not an expression or just a phrase.

Like on page two of this thread, the guy who bitched about people saying they are gonna "pull the trigger" on something. That is a common expression, it's not SUPPOSED to be meant in the literal sense...
I love it when people use figures of speech or idioms and have no idea about their origin. I once had a conversation with a person where they didn't actually say anything except figures of speech. Our language is so confusing and yet it all makes sense.

Avril Lavigne actually used these lyrics in a song... "She's like, so whatever." At first I was like WTF, but it actually made sense

In the end, if this is my biggest "problem" I guess I am doing OK.
They're called figures of speech, and they're used quite commonly as it turns out. Sorry for the bad news.

You not only listened to Avril Lavigne but you also spent time thinking about what it means?
C'mon man...., at least tell me this wasn't played in the M.

BTW Mr AlterPeter,
Mint is not synonymous with new.
There I said it.

No new stuff is never mint, it is new. Mint means it appears as new, is in perfect condition or for collectors of older pieces where some deterioration must occur in as good a condition as something could possibly be considering its age.

Here is a cut and paste....

The term first arose in the realm of coin collecting. Coins are minted and then put into circulation; a mint-condition collector's coin referred to one that looked as if it had come straight from the mint. The term soon expanded to other types of collecting. Now the term has become an accepted part of the vernacular. Mint condition usually refers to objects kept in pristine condition. In many cases, only "perfect" condition.

Okie dokie It's still only a figure of speech, and a commonly used one. I don't think anyone has ever meant to use it in the literal sense when they use it in that context.

It's simply that such a small action (i.e. pulling a trigger) can cause such a dramatic reaction (you spend all your cash, drastic change in situation, whatever it may be). Just a phrase

I have a set of mint rims if you are interested. The actual wheels are f*cked though.
