Question Can I get a dealership to CPO a used M3 after its purchase?

I'm looking at a used 2009 M3 convertible, which still has a year left on its New Car Warranty. Can I buy it used from an out-of-state BMW dealership and then pay some amount to have my local BMW dealership tack on the 2-year CPO warranty at some point before the standard warranty ends?

The dealership that is selling the car wanted to charge me $3000 to add the CPO certification to it before the sale, and said this could NOT be done by any dealership after the car was sold. Is this true?

i believe the dealership is correct. or at least, that's what every dealership that has a CPO program has told me. what they might be willing to do, however, is trade it to your local dealer and then the local dealer can CPO it from its own inventory.

however, i have a feeling that the local dealership would charge you around $3000 to CPO anyway, and you did all that work for nothing

I was under the impression, if it is still under the original factory warranty, you could get the extended warranty that a new owner would be eligible for as long as you do it before the factory warranty expires. May want to verify and ask them about that.

Dealership is correct. The CPO value is anything around $3K - $6K (As far as I know). If you want extra warranty, I would pay the extra $3K and get it now.

It's true, the 3k is dealer cost. Most dealers won't CPO m cars so they can keep competitive with wholesalers. If you look up the msrp for the esc which is the same thing on the DCS it's even more.

Thanks for the responses. I'll have to look into the extended warranty options, but assuming the cost is within a few hundred dollars of the CPO, is there any reason to get one over the other? (2-year/100k extended "limited" warranty either way)? Extended warranties are also transferable if I sell the car, correct?

From my experience with a vert I would pay $3k for a CPO in a second! To be honest the $3k is not too bad to add CPO. My friend has had enormous issues with his vert top - and that sucker is EXPENSIVE to fix.

Have you asked your local dealer if they would CPO the car? In any case, $3k is a reasonable price for a CPO car. Why not just do it with the selling dealer as any BMW dealer will (is suppose to) honor a CPO warranty.

That would probably make the most sense; it would just give me a little bit more freedom to be able to do it after the fact, plus I'd hope to get some sort of discount from my local dealer.

I leased a caddy and wanted to buy the car at the end of the term. It woudl have cost me $28k. They let my wife buy and cpo'd the cart for $26.5. car companies are funny.

I also believe that BMW will only sell an extended warranty to the original owner (but most dealers sell their own extended warranty).

You can not get CPO cheaper than $3K. GL

Do you want it to be CPO or just buy the extended warranty? CPO looks at tire life, accidents, and other random things that have nothing to do with warranty.

Do you really drive enough to get to 100k miles is 3 more years? If not look at some aftermarket warranties (that actually cover bumper to bumper) that are more age/mileage appropriate...like 7/70k.

Pay the 3k, if that car has a roof problem and you are out of warranty, the costs could be fairly high. I have owned three convertibles and these mechanisms are complex. I had one of the three go bad and it was a coat repair. An extended warranty from a third party vendor may cost you more.
