Donít be shocked Iíve switched from MT to M-DCT for a solid reason

Hello Fellow Members,

Well I’ve (or shall I say we) have made our final decision last week. The choice was to keep our Benz, order a new 335i with Automatic Transmission or trade the M3 in for a M3 with M-DCT.

We have made our decision to change from Manual Transmission to the optional M-DCT Drivelogic Transmission. The reason for this is since both my wife and I like to drive this car. My last 2 M3’s have been with the Manual Transmission and I will miss it very much. On the other hand my first 2002 M3 had the 6 Speed SMG Drivelogic Transmission and I found nothing wrong with it. I hear the new M-DCT is much improved (I must admit I’ve never tried the new M-DCT).

The main thing is we will have a car that both my wife and I like (she picked the exterior and interior color and I picked all the rest of the options).

I will take possession tomorrow and here are the details;

KG93 ~ M3 Coupe
Ext. Colour ~ 300 Alpine White
Int. Colour ~ NCSW Black
ZGE ~ MDrive Package (2011)
ZLQ ~ Executive Package
LEA–NO ~ Novillo Leather
2MK ~ M Double Clutch Transmission with Drivelogic
2MT ~ 19 Inch M Double Spoke Alloy Wheels – Style 220m
760 ~ High Gloss Shadow Line.

Planned Modifications; I basically like to keep my cars stock (I did so with our first ever e28 that still is in our family) and I have a hunch this new Alpine White will be a keeper for a long time now that both my wife (10%) and I (90%) will be driving this car.

I will be adding a rear spoiler in CF, a light window tint like I had on our former AW, my trim on the new car is the standard brushed aluminum and that is fine, I may change this to CF trim and I like to somehow hide the muffler that is so visible to drivers following this car.

Plans are to only go to one car so my DD is up for grabs if any of you Canadians Members like to get into a slightly used (only 6,500 KM) and well taken care of fully loaded 2011 Benz C350 4MATIC as your DD or company car just PM me (photos in the Benz garage). I will be posting the Benz on eBay and other sites soon.

I must admit I’ve never gone backwards in my live (trading a 2012 in for a 2011) as I am doing by trading in a later production model for an earlier one. In the end all is relative, lets not forget the main thing is to maintain a smooth and peaceful marriage With gas prices on an ever increasing trend I like to think I am also doing something for the environment by going from 2 cars to only one now that I am officially retired.

Meanwhile “Happy Easter” everyone I shall be busy driving our new M3 and introducing my wife to this wonderful automobile I’m sure in time she will love it too.

Cheers Everyone and take care this Easter Weekend.

Rolf-Dieter

PS.

Photo Shoot too follow soon of our new Alpine White, I will add them here this Easter weekend. Meanwhile you all know what it will look like ~ the one on the left in the picture below. So check back later for pictures

April 5th UPDATE

Brought her home this evening great drive along the 403 and 401 Westbound. Spotted a nice ///M3 in front of me just west of Hamilton followed him for quite a bit until the traffic jam clear up. Then he decided he had enough of me and took off like an arrow Naturally I could not follow him with less then 62 Miles (100 KM) on the odometer so I let him go. I think it was a dark gray exterior colour (first photo below).... Ontario Plates ... was it you ? Hmmmm

Naturally when I got home it was dark so I snapped 2 photos in the garage.. sorry for the crapy iPhone quality ... photo shoot to follow soon. last photos here ....

April 6th Update added a few photos as promised ....

Here are a few photos of my new 2011 e92 M3 picked up from the dealer last night. I visited a friend this afternoon near Port Stanley, Ontario Canada and snapped these photos with my iPhone. A professional Photographer I am not

Be honest, it's because now you can eat a hamburger and drive at the same time. I'm cancelling our M3post friendship...

The current M-DCT is light years beyond previous SMG incarnations. I think you will find it to be more civil when asked to be and more fierce when allowed. This DCT is very difficult to describe unless you have driven it under varying conditions - I made the switch to DCT with this car only after testing driving the E9X when deciding to get one and not having a manual available which is what I was planning on ordering. That test drive reset all my assumptions of DCT and to date, I find it the best of both worlds and no less engaging then my previous manual cars.

Wait didn't you just recently trade a 2011 for a 2012?

Happy marriage? Most wives would have been gone after the first needless trade-in, much less after two. I'll say for sure that if my wife tried to pull something like that with me (3 cars in one year) I am going to demand some serious favor in return such as a 911 turbo cab or a night with her 3 hottest friends or both.

Anyway, enjoy the new car, at least for the next few months until your change you mind again.

Thanks fellows, yes I am bad for the trades I've done. However, I am not the only one to blame here. If my wife would have told me what was really on her mind last November I would have got the M-DCT then and it would have been fine.

Actually I've done not that bad in getting hit financially making this switch has only cost me $5K more with Tax, much less then I expected Then in the end it's only money and once we find a buyer for our DD the Benz we be thousands ahead

Cheers, Rolf

PS. My trading up or down days are now over I can promise you that so this one is a keeper.

Congrats on the M3 redux!

I had a couple of cars with manual transmissions, and then automatic with the recently retired Mazda truck.

But all of my motorcycles (12) since 1980 have been manuals, of course. The sportbikes have been particularly fun because I love heavy downshifting when approaching corners (you don't want to take a knee on a corner at 45 mph and be in 6th gear), and then crank up the gears toward the next turn.

So I was wondering whether the DCT in my M3 would provide that sort of in-cornering fun. Especially since I had NEVER driven an M3, and the only prior BMW I had driven was a 3xx-something automatic.

Having had the M3 DCT now for 4,000+ miles, just in the past week I began experimenting with it in the sequential mode. And throwing down the gears prior to a curve. I TOTALLY love the way the engine burps up as it settles to the gear, and begins to pull higher RPMs. It has a fun sound. I've only been doing this on city streets -- and have not yet put it to a track (soon, on the 5th of May), but AP, I think you'll both have fun with that option to drop to lower gears when you want.

The other thing about the DCT mode in automatic... I came back from Spartanburg on the Tail of the Dragon, with it in automatic and DriveLogic 6 (or whatever is the most aggressive), and on those turns, I was stunned by how wonderful the system figured out what was going on. As I approached one if the 200+ curves, with the M3 tilting a bit and tires beginning to turn, the transmission seemed to expect what was happening...it dropped down to second gear all by itself, and when I pulled out of the turn, it waited until RPM's were up before it moved into third gear. Frankly, it was doing exactly what I would have done....only I was able to keep BOTH hands on the wheel instead of one.

You'll both love it.

Holy Crap. That's like me. I got a 2010 320i, followed by a 2011 330 D followed by a 2012 M3. All new convertibles; and all traded up.

When I think of the money hits; I wanna vomit. Lol. F*ck it Rolf..... It's only Money Baby !!!

Life is toooo freakin' short. Enjoy in good health.

+1. I personally find no shame in using D setting. Around town, and even in spirited driving, the M-DCT has enough torque, and enough smarts to figure out a good gear 95% of the time. It's nice that S-mode is just a paddle flick away, but D mode holds gears long enough for me to break any posted speed limit with ease.

I drove many twisties in the Austrian and Italian Alps, with both hands on the wheel in D5, and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it.
