Painted the midsection of stock muffler (pics)

Like everyone else, the stock muffler bugs me.

So my wife and I dropped the catback, taped the part we didn't want painted, and put 3 separate coats of VHT Flameproof Coating (flat black) on it. I think it looks a lot better. I'm getting the OEM mod next weekend (not sure which one) so I definitely had to change the look of the stock muffler.

Anyways, tell me what ya think. Sorry if the pics suck, the lighting was not optimal and they were taken by my iPhone.

I'm gonna sit with it for a week or so and if I wind up hating it I'll just paint the whole thing.

I like also what you did keep us up to date how it holds out... thanks BTW see them red clamps in the first photo they should be black as well

If anyone from BMW reads this I too like so many others hate the exposed view of the mid muffler section also (people driving behind us must say look at that) .... I posted a thread earlier ----> CLICK

I hope on the next generation M3 this will not show as much as on the e9x

I don't like the looks of it that much, I painted the whole thing black. You have a pretty cool wife though

IMO more attention is now drawn towards your two-tone muffler

Better to do the whole can black. Looks worse this way IMHO. You'll have to repaint your where you just painted post Oem mod anyway unless you are doing the bypass method.

You should paint the whole muffler. My wife helps me install exhausts, splitters, diffusor, lip & change oil too.

I'm gonna survey around.. The shots I took obviously kind of show it from the ground, but if you are standing there and it passes by it looks great, I think. It's not NEAR as obvious as you would think.

Like I said, gonna let it digest for a few days before I make the decision to keep it or not.

i think in up-close, it looks wierd, but on a black car from afar, it looks great, kind of like what it looks like on the back of a E46 M3. Our E9X M3 canisters do stick out quite a bit.

I agree. I think possibly the ONLY folks who will hate on it are M3 freaks and it's kind of expected--especially aftermarket catback owners. Not all, but possibly some..

Anyways, I'm tellin' ya, on the road it looks great, but once you get right up on it, you can tell it's painted. I think the same holds if I painted the entire thing though..

I suggest maybe painting the rest of the canister and leave the tips as is, or paint the whole darn thing.

I agree with bbs_lm. If you feel the need and have to paint it, paint the whole thing except for the tips. Personally, I wouldn't do it at all but the job you've done now looks like you have duel mufflers. No Good

Too funny....I had thought about doing the same thing. Now that I have seen it, I think it would be best to paint the whole thing. That said I still think i will be going with aftermarket.

Choices are narrowed to:

M Performance
Eisenmann Sport
Vorsteiner
AA

This is after listening to sound clip after sound clip. I even hooked up to my full home theater system, played it loud in STADIUM mode so I might get a feel for what they sound like echoing off buildings.

I tried something a little different.....

I agree with most, the entire muffler, when painted black, appears almost invisible from behind. I tried something a little different polishing the muffler. I have since converted to the OEM Performance Exhaust. I have attached photographs of my initial 2011 OEM Muffler after polishing.
