I figured people like Dave, with disposable incomes, was gonna pre-order one.

Lol, it also sounds like I won't be showing interest in it until may when they release the bottom line pricing to retailers . I'm not willing to pay full retail on a few updates to software

Actually, I think the starting price will be off putting to most people that would be interested in this unit.

And even with disposable income, you want to make it last, or get the most with the money so that you can afford other luxuries still.

I'd wait a year and pick one up in the pro used market once the hype dies down. My mkII was purchased 8 months after its release for 70% of what the lowest new ones cost but only had 2000 shutter clicks on it.

probably someone who spent all earnings on the camera and could afford other upkeep.

great way to get a camera!

So I see the canon crowd thinking "wait and see" as what is currently available is only steps behind.
I see the 5D mkIII as a huge upgrade over the II. Not sure why people would even think it's an incremental upgrade. We definitely don't need more megapixels.

I think it's only incremental because there's almost no improvement in IQ. The pixel density only changed incrementally and most of the IQ improvement comes higher ISOs.

I already own a 5D2 and a 7D, so I've got the speed and AF system needed for my bird and wildlife shooting.

Will i buy the Mk III? Well, yes, but in no big hurry. There'll be times when I welcome not battling the AF while using it as my second camera for wildlife. The faster fps will be nice, but not a big issue, given that the 7D is still faster and more appropriate for fast moving objects.

The biggest MkIII improvements seem aimed at video buffs, which where I have almost no interest.

Dave

I guess that's where we differ. I love the fact that the 5D dual purposes for video and stills. Since I enjoy shooting both, the camera is a huge upgrade.

I also agree it's a huge upgrade, and here's why:

1. two stops of ISO noise-less improvement. and two stops of accessible ISO boost.
2. video compression improvements and two options.
3. 720p @ 60fps
4. huge AF improvement (21 cross-type versus ONE)
5. two generations better CPU (and newer sensor tech)
6. weather sealing improvements and double the card capacity
7. HUGE reduction in shutter lag!
8. 100% viewfinder coverage vs 98%
9. 30 minute versus 12 minute video recording
10. bunch of other video upgrades

With that said, all users are different and some may see these upgrades as marginal. and that's fine.

i was thinking of replacing my D3 with 1Dx so that I could shoot both stills and video with a camera that I own, and the 1Dx would match the D3's ruggedness. but now I think the 5D3 would suffice. i think i'll still keep my D3 though. :\ it's too much of an historical camera - it was the first low-light monster ever. and is only defeated by its predecessors.

I don't get why canon hasn't added aperture control during video recording. I think that's unfortunate. hopefully that will be an upgrade.

especially with all that ISO control.

there has always been aperture and shutter control in video. do you mean the smooth aperture control that is gradual? i think they added that to the 5D3 and 1Dx.

.
1.The two-stops in DR improvement is only for in-camera jpeg processing. For RAW files it's less than a stop.
2, 3, 6, 9 and 10 are of no use to still photographers.

7. I hadn't about that one and I'm not sure that I believe it. I've never experienced shutter lag with my 5D2.

5. That's only important if it delivers more DR and less noise. I think it will, but I doubt that it'll be "huge". The processor does help with AF and FPS.

I WILL buy it, but mainly for the AF and slight improvement in DR.

Dave

DR, i was referring to noise in the high-ISO, not dynamic range.
i bolded the items that were not video-specific.

and regarding shutter lag: this is something I've noticed being a D3 shooter. the shutter lag on that is about 40-50ms. when you hit it, it takes your shot - it's instant. with the 5D2, and even the 7D, it's very slow compared to that - like 100-150ms. you could tell a difference if you've experienced it, i promise. i've never shot with a recent 1D, but i imagine it's about the same as the D3.

but it's all relative, i suppose.

#6 is pretty important to wedding photographers. We often shoot in harsh weathers, beach, rain, snow etc. and the dual slot gives extra security, with CF saving raw and sd saving jpeg.

I know why they left the flash off on the previous generations, but for them to continue to is just them cutting costs now.... in my opinion

the shutter lag is a huge benefit, I remember switching from my T1i to my 5DmkII and then to my 7D and seeing major differences each time. At this point i'm so used to the 2 that I don't really notice the difference as much anymore, but any improvement is good improvement in that category.

A moment can sometimes only be an instant, so you better capture it when it happens. And almost instant shutter is the best way to get it.

I'll keep an eye on the reviews before looking into this thing further. It's very tempting as is, but I would be upgrading for the sake of upgrading, and that's not really a good reason. If this think blows the mkII out of the water for dynamic range and noise reduction, then I will likely be going for it. The fast auto focus is just the cherry on top.

There are many reasons for non-wedding photogs to take their cameras out in non-ideal weather conditions.

The shutter lag on the 5D2 is noticeable, but what bothers me the most is lack of or slow AF during low light conditions.

Already owning the 5D2 makes it easier to, at least, to wait for the full reviews of the 5D3 AND the 1D-X. If I had to decide today, I'd stay with the 5D/7D combo.

I'm wondering what you're talking about. IF, a big IF, my 5D2 gives focus confirmation (beep, beep), then I don't notice any lag compared to my 7D. It does have more trouble gaining AF and when it's not locked on it refuses to shoot. That's not lag, IMHO, but AF failure.

It could be that I'm not as sensitive as you, but I'd think that I'd notice when shooting moving wildlife. (I make darn sure the silly thing has locked on).

I have AF removed from my shutter release. I use the AF-on button for that. so when I take a shot, it takes a shot, regardless of what's in focus.
do this on rented cameras too.

so the shutter lag referring to is strictly shutter response time.

Dave I imagine this would be something you do as a wildlife photog.
If not, I can't imagine having the camera focus again, just because you depressed the shutter button. I think you'd miss a lot of shots because of that.

Have you ever tried this way?
