M 335d

The 335d is pretty heavy and they'll have to shift a LOT more. So they lose a lot of time there especially when you compare the gear boxes, auto vs DCT.

Yeah, you might be able to tune that 335d to 1,000,000 whp but can it put the power down? Look at the HPF e46 M3s..they just spin tires so they just brag about 60-130mph times.

With all that being said, recently a friend of mine was talking about buying a 335 and modding it so it can be faster than my m3. "Yeah, my car will be faster than yours," he would say. My response: "but you will still be driving a 335." I never heard talk about it since then.

Yes yes, 335 is a fast car, I even had 3 guys drive 335 want to race me on street in just one day, one of them even downshift 3 times to draw my attention, for me I just don't get the point, you want me to check out your 335?

Is driving an M all about the straight line or track? Maybe it's about the total package. Personally, my M3 fits me right now. Don't care about the guy next to me at the stoplight.

I feel like this is a comparison similar to a guy who holds so much pride in being a natural bodybuilder vs a guy who "supplements". Haters will be haters. M3s are the ELITE of the 3-series for a reason factually. The benchmark of performance and of that competitive edge. Everyone can justify their case but do you really think the geniuses for engineers at BMW would allow for the lesser to be better in any way??

If you look at that link - the 80-120kph at 4.4 seconds for the m3 was in-gear at 4th gear, which would have been a less optimal gear for horsepower than 3rd. Therefore - the stock M3 in third gear from 80-120 kph probably would have been faster than 4.0 sec's (although that 4.0 time for 335d was still pretty impressive).

And btw - I have an E93 and have had several loaner 335d's - my E93 is definitely quicker as long as you're using the correct gears. 0-60 and quarter mile times for e93 are also faster than for 335d, even though E93 weighs 4145 lbs vs 3825 for 335d - horsepower is obviously mire important for acceleration than torque.

Years ago, a friend and I had two similar E34s, his was a 93 M3 with the wonderful S38B38 and mine, a chipped 95 540i/6 Sport. I was probably within 10 or so HP of him, and with a 6-speed instead of a 5-speed, my 5 was pretty close to his for straight line acceleration, but....as many M guys here have rightly pointed out, and M car is the whole package, and that is NOT just a few parts here and there.

Like Moxie and HotRod, if I could, I'd have both an E90 M3 and the 335D to give the best of both worlds, that no one car could provide....well, that's if I didn't move to Germany and get an M550xd...

No matter what others may say about their own personal tastes or what's right for them, the fact is the M3 is the top of the game for the 3-series...as the French say, "pointe finale!"

Off topic; but curious - are the diesel pumps as disgusting in Canada as they are in the US? First mod to the X5 was latex gloves in the trunk. : )

No, they're actually pretty clean, usually. I think that since it's mostly VW/Audi/M-B/BMW types using the automotive diesel pumps we're pretty careful as a general rule. The pumps that are messier are at stations where either work trucks or pick-ups use them more often.

M3 and X5d is a nice pairing, BTW! Best of both worlds!

Grrrrr. That pisses me off actually. I have yet to find one clean diesel pump in the US! Found a couple with broken shutoff valves and others that straight leak on the ground! ; (

i personally think the 335 powerplant shocked everyone with its power potential. i agree that M's are superior in turning and stopping, but i dont think these "geniuses" at bmw expected 335 owners to pull away from M3's with less than a grand in mods. ive pulled away from M's with a simple tune and drop in filter (12.5@111), added dps/axleback exhaust and stretched my buddies stock M3 by 7 cars. not bad for less than 2k in mods imo.

there's no surprise why they are turbo charging the M's now.

4.4 was achieved in 4'th gear in the M3.

Do it in 3'rd and tell me if the 335D could beat it...

Exactly! Any car can be modded to beat another car that is stock. I could put 4 turbos on and try to beat a Veyron. At the end of the day, it is what it is.

nothing out of the normal for the N54. heres an old timeslip i had running on the stock run flats. nothing but a tune on this run, i hit the 12.58 on hoosier radials cutting a 1.75 60' with virtually the same trap speed. still looking for that slip. 110 111mph traps are good for mid 12's with reasonable traction. we all know that.

the slip was from last may, i joined this forum in april when i got my e92. so im not really kidding when i said i simply had a tune. its a totally different car now, but thats besides the point. cheers.
