Before I think about an M3, which car do I learn how to drive a MT on?

To the OP, s2000 is a great car to learn stick - my first true sports car, best transmission, perfect gearing, amazing overall feel to the car. The s2000 and M3 share a lot of charateristics, high reving, low displacement, high hp to liter ratio, good looking and very respectable in track events. practicality however is tough spot with the s2000, I think you can steal an AP1 these days, most have been bulletproof.

I forgot if the car is FWD OR RWD, but my little brother had one of these before going for this HR350z>5.0GT.

For the price, do you think this would be a nice car to learn how to drive on? The engine rebuilt has me feeling iffy.

I'd stay away from 3000s. Old ugly, imho.

If you are just learning to drive a manual, I wouldn't go for a 6spd M3. It'll take you another decade of driving manuals before you'll be able to drive the M3 and have fun with it. The high revving nature of this engine is not optimal for novice drivers and you'll probably get frustrated with the transmission quickly. You'll see why some people complain about getting beat off the line by soccer moms and that they have to rev the car high to go fast in the manual. That's not the car's fault, it's the driver. I shift my Mazdaspeed 3 at below 3k rpm and I'm the fastest guy at stop lights because I can row through the gears quickly. The boost doesn't kick in until above 3k rpm in that car.

Ummm... This isn't heart surgery. I've taught lots of people how to drive a stick and it takes about 30 minutes. Then an afternoon of them practicing and it's done.

OP, stop stressing. It's not that big of a deal, seriously. Don't buy a car just to learn with, that's crazy. Get what you want cuz the "learning" process is very short.

Then there's the acclimation process for each car. They all have different feels, clutch weight, engagement point, rpm sweet spots, etc that you just learn as you drive it. Why go through that process on some car you don't even want?

I learned how to drive with a stick. Drove for years before ever getting to drive an automatic. All you are learning is just the shifting part. It's easy. Stop stressing and go look for the car you want.

When I was 16 I could not decide what to do for the next 10 years, go to Medical School or learn to drive an MT. I still regret not going to medical school.

Well, I ended up not driving a manual car... or even picking one up.

My little brother wants to let go of his finance on the 2012 Mustang 5.0 GT (6MT, brembo, 3.73).

I think I will end up taking that payment over... I hope the car is just as forgiving to learn on compared to the M3.

That S2000 stick is great. Light clutch, short throws. It spoils you.

I learned on a 1986 735i. Once you build the leg strength to deal with that clutch, you can do anything

buy an old e36 with MT to practice. The 6 MT tranny in BMW is notchy so you need to get used to that.

If you learn in an M3, you'll have hill assist and what fun is that when you're pionted uphill at a stop light and the person behind you left about 2 inches between their front bumper and your rear one?
