Will I regret 20" wheels w/ my Commute?!

I drive about 17k miles per year in the M. Most of it is highway and a nice curvy mountain road, but some of it is on the streets of San Francisco, which aren't that well maintained.

My question is, how much will I regret driving so many miles per year with 20" rims, such as HRE P40s? Does anyone drive as much with rims and is it close to stock, or completely regrettable?

It'd be good to know if I'm making a bad decision given my commute and what you all think.

Thanks!

I went from oem 18s to oem 19s and I can tell a difference in the ride.. so i'll assume more difference for 20s. Personally I think 20s are too big on the car unless you are going to a Hot Import Nights DUB show or something retarded. (my 2 cents)

Sorry I didn't really have any valuable input.

I don't have much to add either, other than I agree with the above post. I'm on 19" ZCP, and potholes are definitely the enemy. 20's with an ultra low profile tire can't possibly give you better handling, a better ride, and personally I think they look too big on this car, too.

I have 20" and it doesn't bother me
I don't think 17k a year is a lot .. But it's more than I do
My car is lowered, so I'm not sure if you're planning to drop the car or just leave it stock height. I don't think you would feel too much difference if not lowered but then again I don't see the point of changing wheels from stock 19" if you are not going to 20" and I would never buy wheels and not lower the car at least an inch.
I would recommend you to drive the car stock since you seem like the worrying type, because if you had to ask this means you are not a modified type of person.
I'm used to it and I can never drive a car stock! Every car I had was lowered with rims and exhaust.. Those are the first 3 steps after I buy any car
So YES you will feel a big difference with 20" wheels, stock felt so much more comfortable for daily commute .. But I get away with that since I don't drive my car daily

I would go with 20"
Like you said, you drive mostly highway.
Plus, how a nice set of 20s look on an e9x M

I'll probably go with the Eibach lowering springs (I can't go too low with my driveway... or maybe I'll just move?). To clarify, I have an E92 now that I didn't mod, but I've got a new one on order and I plan to modify that. So, I don't have a lot of modifying experience and I do prefer a stiffer, sportier ride. I'm usually in one of the sportier EDC settings now and I have the 19s, and like it just fine... just wondering if all bets are off with 20s...

All the E9X M3's we've built wheels for have opted for 20" and they all look great.. Of course 20" isn't recommended for track use but that's what you have your factory wheels for!

We currently have a set of our SM8's in 20" in stock for the E9X M3 so if you're looking to get a set of wheels asap, we could have them done and ready to ship within a week!

Good luck on your search and feel free to PM me with any questions or concerns you may have!

fwiw, i would agree with above posters that 20's are about asthetics only and will negatively impact the ride...and i also agree that they are too big for the car...but that's just a personal opinion.

20" if you have no appreciation for performance or engineering.

20" is definitely not too big for the e9x M3...especially if you get rims with a lip
HRE P40's look too small in 19 on the M3 IMO

I was in the same boat as you were when I was shopping for wheels; 19" or 20". I went with 20" for the following reasons. They do look better if you choose the right wheel. I personally think a flush wheel looks better than one with a lip. If you're going to pull off 20s make sure they are forged and a quality wheel. Next I was going to get a BBK. It just looks a bit off with the stock brakes and a 20" wheel, like the rotors are too small.
As for comfort yes you will be sacrificing some but it's not much. I do feel a difference when I swap out to my winter wheels which are the stock 19" but it's not a night and day difference.
Good luck with your decision!

I am in San Francisco. I'd say that anything above 19s would be terrible on the streets around here. The city streets are like driving on the surface of the moon and the highways are bombed out with bumps, dips and holes. Imagine the pain and damage you'll see when you hit a hole at 70mph! I feel like I need an off road vehicle when driving around some of these streets...

In case anyone doesn't know: the San Francisco area has the worst roads in the nation.
