Clock "loses" time. Time for new battery?

After a couple of short outings showing off the car to my siblings last weekend, I noticed on Tuesday morning that the clock had lost an hour. So I just corrected the time. Once I got to work, the low batt warning came on after I shut off the car. On Thursday, I noticed that my clock was off again, this time by 10 minutes. Is this a sign that the battery is going bad?

Does your car get a good run on the way to work or is it a lot of stop and go, headlights on, other draw on the electrics? BMW's have a really interesting way to shut off non-essential draw. It makes sense that the clock is part of that process.

The battery has an green indicator that should show if it is still good, but in my experience the indicator is only connected to one cell so unless they are all bad or that cell is bad, your best bet it to take it in for a test.

I drive 45 miles daily with about 10 lights each way averaging 50 mph. But I don't drive it much on weekends. It's a shame I know. I'll see if I can take a look at the battery indicator.

i have had the same problem for about 6mnths...havnt come around to fixing it yet b/c my local dealer refuses to replace it under warranty. They blame my daily short 20min daily drives to work.

interesting how your clock is slow rather than just asking you to set the time again. In most caes I've heard/read/ and personally experienced myself..the clock was reset and I had to set again, with an occcasional high battery drain warning. My dealer did replace my battery under warranty (this was with my e60 a few years back, 2 years into ownership) without question. Don't let the dealer use the "unfavorable driving profile" find another SA or dealer.

but since the OP is getting the battery warning along with clock errors, i would suspect the battery first before anything else...

I recently had a Low Batt problem with my Mom's 2010 528xi. Dealer pulled up a history of the Driving Trips in the last 60 days and said we need to either:

1. Drive the car more.
2. Purchase a Battery Tender.

I already have a Battery Tender for my M3 that gets stored during the winter. It works great and I have no problems.

I drive maybe 250 miles a week in my car. Round trip to work and back is 4 miles. Dealer or SA never mentioned such nonsense as driving profile...ridiculous...

but a battery tender/trickle charger is the common suggestion/alternative

Agreed, it is pretty ridiculous. For my Mom, she never knows if her Battery will start the car (extreme situation, I know).

Good Luck with your issue!

Chris

Now I know why Rolf decided to leave the forum. Posts that actually mean something either get deleted or moved a low-key area. Whereas, posts like this stay around for no reason, I'm sure if you went from pages 1 to 4 in the General Section (same section this is posted) you will find at least 10 threads on this same issue.

Can't you just go to your dealership or use your brain and search? Seriously, it's like spoon feeding a baby.
