BMW Individual madness

I could not help but notice the amount of "Individual" spec E90 series M3's that are appearing on the market, are BMW making a load of them as the M3's production is not far from an end???

Examples of the individual cars.

It's win-win if you ask me. BMW seems to be more lax on approving individual exterior paint for the E9X series, which in turn makes the owners happy, but also helps keep resale values a bit higher (or helps raise the average price of a used E9X M3).

I don't know. Most those colors are terrible imo. I do like individual stitching but I don't think it will ever be worth the costs.

I have to agree, the inside of our car is nice as it is. After all we get in, close the door, fasten the seatbelt, push start and enjoy the drive. 95% of the time our eyes are focused on the road ... with the occasional glance at the ladies as we pass by.

So why would we add more fancy stuff inside I'll use the money for gas

I only went Individual (for part of the car, just the paint & trim) because:

(a) I can
(b) This is a damn expensive car. If I'm going to buy it, I'm going to spec it like I really want.
(c) Price was reasonable for what I got, for me.

Apart from the green monstrosity, those are BMW UK cars. The give away is the "Y$11 $$$". All cars registered by BMW UK, as opposed to a dealer in the network, have the Y plates as they get registered in the county of York.

They are worth tracking down as they have a high specification. I've owned one of them in the past (a 2008 120d M Sport) and the option sheet was extreme.

I do like some of the Individual Options, but, for me, I wouldn't spend 5k just for paint and some stitching. Now, if they toss in some performance components, black grills, rims, etc, then it might be more appealing. My $0.02.

I would be tempted to pay the $5K for that Santorini blue.

A couple of those were pretty hideous. It's unfortunate that BMW's standard color palette is so limited, as it would be nice to have more color diversity among the e9x ownership.

It's actually $5K just for the paint and a few thousand more for the stitching (in the US).

I'm not sure what the upcharge is in the UK, but it could be less. It's less in Canada for a few, select Individual paint colors (and is packaged with individual trim and shadowline). Anything outside of the (few) 'standard' offerings is similar in price though to that in the US.

To answer your question, BMW does not push these colors...all cars are ordered from them - either by the dealer or an individual working through a dealer.

Now the special editions, yes that is definitely marketing/design, but again, they must be ordered and paid for...what happens next has little to do with BMW.

If I were ordering an M3 today, I would go with individual paint and stitching.

Incorrect. As I stated, these car with Y$ beginning the licence plate, where the $ is any other letter of the alphabet, are ordered and spec'd by BMW UK, not persons ordering nor dealers.

I didn't see your post, but my understanding is that all of the BMW country entities operate independently from BMW AG. For example, the BMW performance center here in the states is run by BMW USA. The factory, 2 miles away is run by BMW AG. If the performance center wants to put an individual car on display, for whatever reason, then BMW USA buys the car from BMW AG. So all that this establishes is that BMW UK owns the cars...doesn't mean it reflects a strategy of flooding the market with "individual" cars by BMW AG.

I am not so sure, as the fact that BMW GB employees are speccing these cars in numbers, is new. Quite what the strategy - if it exists - is intended to achieve is harder to work out. Whether it is intended to give the E9x M3 a "send off", or perhaps highlight the Individual Programme, or something else is not clear.

The UK market is fairly conservative when it comes to colour choices and at least a couple of those cars will be complete no-no's for most people, and difficult to sell. The dealer pricing is low, for such highly specced cars too.

Don't forget also that UK drivers of company provided cars (as these are) are taxed on a formula which includes the list price, as supplied. So each of the original users will be paying more tax on these than they would on a more mainstream spec.

Strategy notwithstanding, ex-BMW "management" cars are generally a good choice, with most toys included, and in near pristine condition when they get into the BMW AUC network. And they are usually specced to ensure that they sell quickly.

I bought my wife an ex-BMW GB 330d M-Sport Tourer with most toys, and there were numerous similarly specced cars available at the same time. All sold very quickly.

Santorini Blue? The Green thing. I cant see them selling quickly.....
