Great review. I appreciate the honest feedback. I think this review will helpful for those wondering about the two.

Had thought about getting a used E46 (they look so good!), but I'm too used to the increased refinement of the current generation.

I think if one word could be chosen to seperate the two-it would be refinement. Acceleration, handling and all that is quite comparable for the most part but it really comes down to the e9x is much more refined. Some think that is a bad thing, some think its good. I think majority feels the same way as the video. 90 percent of poeple would readily take an e9x over an e46 but both are great cars and for 20k you cannot go wrong with a nice old e46 m3

Enjoyed it. Other than the m-button/more power thing, it was good.

Would have enjoyed a bit more direct comparison between the two cars.

And the e46 does look dated at times, but head-on, I think I still prefer it to the looks of the e90.

I enjoyed watching the video, it was well made and entertaining.
The E46 M3 is still a great looking car and I agree that the manual is the better used choice...much as I enjoyed the SMG cars I had, the system is likely to be more troublesome than the manual with more miles - I went through 3 clutches in 40,000 in my last one! If I was buying used I would look for the facelift version - 2004MY onwards IIRC.
The only thing I would disagree with in the video was the statement on the E46 M3 steering which is definitely too "slow".
Compared to the E46 M3, the E92 M3 really improved on the steering speed as well as turn in and front end grip...initially it may feel like the E46 M3 communicated better with the road but what makes the E92 seem less communicative is that it has so much more grip....once you get the E92 M3 to the edge its equally good at letting you know whats going on.

Thanks to the OP for posting. I enjoyed watching the videos. I hadn't heard of EverydayDriver before. I thought they were good. It's likely that I'll watch more of their stuff.

Good video. A sense of honesty comes through. I especially liked the comment on how the E90 looks better proportioned. I'm biased.

I think time will show that these guys got their reviews for the interior backwards. The E46 interior is much nicer. The E46 cockpit seems to wrap around you, I immediately feel like a part of the car, its just feels so right. The E90 interior, while still very good, doesn't quite have that intimacy to it...I feel more like a passenger riding in the car.

I think you'll find the E90 interior surfaces are not nearly as nice. For example, the E90 armrest and door handles are hard and rough. If you spend enough time in each cockpit, you'll realize the E46 is better put together. How the trim is part of the dash, the design of the cupholders, and the placement of the controls.

Time will tell, I don't think the E9X interior will age well. That E46 interior was kind of beat up.

I disagree. The much less busy interior of an Idrive m3 e90 is very minimalist approach and I am sad to see bmw to go back to many more buttons on the dash with newer models. The 2010 and up have such a clean interior. Really big LCD (which with time will be one of the aging qualities of the car), seats are much more modern looking, steering wheel nicer, door speakers with premium much more upper end looking and less little buttons all over the dash.

I personally think the e90 and the e60 interiors were the best thing ever. Love the clean dash look

Yeah, I liked that they drove the cars pretty hard. However, the example of the E46 M3 was really poor. Would be better to drive a (ZCP) E46 M3 with low miles and no moonroof. Not sure why both cars were the auto versions either. The SMG vs. DCT is a no brainer, the SMG is a piece of junk and people on M3F are switching them out for 6MT's as the cars age.

Same here. Sad how many people ruin a nice car by making it look cheap/hideous with tacky add-ons.
