As for scotch, you can't go wrong with a nice bottle of Glenmorangie... and Glenlivet and Glenfiddich being popular as well. Scotch comes in a lot of different forms and distillations and maturation, and unless you know what he likes to begin with, it may be hard to pick out one he'll like.

If he likes very peaty, smoky, strong flavored scotch, I've really taken a liking to Lagavulin 16 lately and it's not really pricey. There is a scotch thread in here somewhere I think, with tons of input....

If you're buying him scotch, I would suggest buying him something he wouldn't drink on a day to day basis or likely buy for himself. I mean something that would be a real treat regardless of his favorite region. I personally would suggest Balvenie Thirty.
