I wouldn't say a "true M3 has to be manual"... DCT is great too. It just depends on personal preference. I miss the MT, but I have a LOT of fun with the DCT as well, and my wife can actually drive it as well (family man factor).

Anyways, yes OP, I'd go for it now. It is an amazing car. I was at the Nurburgring this weekend and once again I realized I made a great choice.

Lease an M3 now, and wait till BMW works out the kinds on the M4 or whatever they're going to call it and then pick one up. I bought a first year Kawasaki ZX-6R motorcycle...biggest mistake I've ever made.

The M3's DCT is unmatched. The engine is amazing, and the car can transform in a press of a button(literally). The sound of the engine at 8,300 revs is an added bonus and VERY intoxicating. The M4 will likely debut in 2014 as a 2015 model from what I have heard. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Actually Porsche's PDK is just as good if not better depending on the application.

RWD with proper winter tires is far better than AWD with summer or all-season tires. AWD with proper winter tires, however, is far superior. If you live in an area where you really drive in a lot of snow, you will really do better with AWD and winter tires.

However, if you think about it, most of the time, even after a big storm, the roads get plowed pretty quickly, so the amount of times you are actually driving in significant snow is really minimal. In that circumstance, what you need from your snow tires is cold weather performance and some added traction for the little bit of snow and ice that is around. The M3 with proper winter tires should suffice for this without much issue.

+1

I own a '09 and '12 e92 M3 (took delivery Fri evening ), and the '12 feels much more "solid" with zero interior creaks. The back seat/interior of my '09 has creaked from day one. IMO, in the '12, there's definitely been an improvement in steering feel and weight plus the DCT has no detectable lag (very slight "clutch slipping" when cold but vastly improved) and it downshifts without hesitation to lower gears, 2nd in particular (in the '09 this is hit or miss even with the latest software update, unless driving mod to aggressive). Finally the S65 is an awesome engine and, personally, I'd not miss out on owning what most likely will be the one and only V8 powered M3!

If after owning the E92 M3, you still want a F8x M3/4 then wait until the start of the third production year and you'll get a "solid" next gen car AND, by then, your E92 M3 will be paid off - best of both

Unless grill-mounted automatic rifles are an options package for clearing the road of drivers who are texting. The M designers are a pretty innovative group, I wouldn't count it out just yet.

the E90, 92 and 93 M3 have won awards for best V8 engine (power, efficiency, response...) the F80 M3 and future M4 could be a big bust. however the only valid argument would be to use the F10 M5. if the future of BMW is a reflection of the M5 i would wait for the new M3. i personally am not a fan of turbos... Ultimately it is your decision and i was contemplating the same scenario a few months ago and i ordered my 2012 M3 JZB in manual.

I'm sure you'll be happy either way you go

I would get the e92 while you can. It's an amazing ride. The F80 will probably be as well, but the coupe won't be out until 2014 or so. That's 3 years you will have to spend not revving this V8! You can get a bargain on a used e92 and then trade it in for the F80 in 2.5-3 years it will all work out perfectly.

I've been seeing a lot of these same sentiments lately and I personally don't agree. People argued that the E46 M3 (while one of the best made) still depreciated normally even though it was going to be the last N/A I6. The same people said having a V8 in an M3 is heresy. The only M3 that will be considered a classic and collectible is the E30.

Personally, I'll be in the market for an E92 myself, but just thought I'd comment.

You missed my point completely. I'm not commenting on the choice of drive-train or engine. I'm commenting on the creation of the ///M4 for the coupes, thus destroying the name ///M3.

People seem to think change = progress = better. Which just ins't always true.

Cheers,

Just go get a new e92 M3 and keep the e46 M3... only buy the F80 if BMW keep the M3 name (not M4).

OP - if you're willing to wait 4 years (3, if you want to pay the premium mark-up) for the M4, then wait. However, right now you can get a used M3 for relatively cheap, experience the V8 and trade it in in 4 years for the M4 with some change to trade. You can have it all essentially.

Go get that e92 and you won't be looking back GLWB - NOTE: If you go new, hit up GOLFRR (on the forum) who will put you in touch with Ryan Amico at Steve Thomas - hands down best guy to lease a new M3 with.

I had the same question about 6 years ago. Buy an e46 or wait for an e92?

Firstly, why did you did you wait so long to consider an E9X M3?
What has changed that you're looking to make the jump now?

If you suddenly have the money to play with, get the E9X now and then
buy the new M3 later.

(For the record, I refuse to use the number four next to the letter M until I absolutely have to .)
