Perfect balance between sports car and practical daily driver... if that's what you're looking for.
There are sportier and lighter autos out there for the price, but then you start to lose out on practicality.

What car is faster than the M3, and has 4 seats? CTS-V is the only one I can think of, and that car is not my style. I have driven it.

FYI, sorry wasn't trying to get off topic but I was looking at used 911 vs new m3 so cost was about comparable or less depending.

C63 AMG (in a straight line) but I agree with everyone that the M3 is still the best all around car

Bought mine used. I was settled on a subaru STi, which is $46k for a full load in Canada. Then, I realized that I didn't want a toy-like econobox with an engine that has been around for a decade. It was brought to my attention that I could get a used M3 for the same price out of the US, and, well, I did. Extremely happy with my choice.

My Uncle was a BMW interior (ergonomics) design engineer and he turned me onto Bimmer's when I was a kid. The obsession started there. The 3 series always did it for me and the M3 reigns King...it was just a natural progression for me.

I cross shopped Mustangs/302/500, Camaro [SS, and was eyeing the soon to be released version with the ZR-1 motor], as cheaper alternatives. However in response to the OP, they aren't THAT much cheaper. The difference is roughly 15k

15k is a big chunk of money, but in the context of buying a car, if you are dropping 50k~, +15k~ isn't a big deal. No point to drop 50k on something you sort of want, instead of ponying up the extra 15k to get exactly what you want. If +15k is a big deal then the 50k on the "faster/cheaper" car is probably an unwise purchase.

I also cross shopped a 1M, and from a price perspective it's almost the same as a M3, considering 1M MSRP +5k is almost the same as a M3 for invoice price. Ignoring everything else about the differences between a 1M and M3, I choose the M3 b/c I wasn't going to pay M3 money for a 1M.

It's what you get when you try to maximize, performance, practicality, comfort, convenience, looks and luxury. It's not the best at any one of those six things, but it's 8/10 in each one. So yeah you can buy cars that are better in some ways, but they will be much worse overall.
Well said. My sentiments exactly.

My requirements were:
  1. Sedan
  2. Manual transmission
  3. Handling and power to keep me entertained on canyon roads and track days
  4. Refined, comfortable, with an aesthetic that doesn't scream "racer boy"

My last car was an Evo X MR and it did everything I wanted (even though it was a DCT) but it lacked the comfort and build quality that the M3 has. And it had too much of the Fast & Furious image to it...

So there weren't really many choices in this price range other than Audis and I'm not a big fan of the way they drive.

It is about which car can deliver the overall most enjoyable driving experience, all factors considered. And this is why the M3 is legendary.

cause m3 was my dream car, the first time i know this car is from need for speed. and that was an e 46 m3, after years, when e 92 came out, i just love this car by no reason, it looks so cool, and everyone says that this car is the monster on the road, and it's a legend

"The BMW M3 is the best car, and always will be, and there's no point in ever thinking otherwise." -- Jeremy Clarkson...

Reason I bought mine, is simply, he was right.

Yes he was, only he was not always right in what he said he put the BMW down many a times ... then I don't care about his opinion anyway I much more respect what Top Gear's James May, Captain Slow and Richard Hammond have to say

It's not the best at everything but it does everything exceptionally well. As stated previously is the whole package. A GTR is faster, but my M3 is more beautiful and more comfortable.

Very cool! I never heard of it. I thought you had a typo in there
Looks like they used the SPR engine, clutch and gearbox for it.

Just get into an M3

I was not planning to purchase one, but afer test driving it there was just no way I could not get one.

If you are in doubt just test drive one - you will get your answer then why i would rather pay more and get the M3 than a cheaper and maybe faster car.

I can set the dct to a conservative setting and not attract much attention when going to church etc, but when i want to hear that engin its just a push of a button away.

This car is just awesome - i have never felt this way before over about a car. I have had many BMWs before, but the M3 is just in a diffirent world.

I was told this car would put a smile on my face each time I drive it, but i thought it was just another sales gimmic - but its true, you cannot help but to get a smile on your face when you hear the V8!
