Is it too late to buy a E92 M3?

Hi Everyone,

This is my first post on this forum. I drive a pretty crappy car right now (1997 Honda Accord) and I am planning on upgrading very soon. I like driving and I am a car fan.

I have seen tons of videos on the M3 and read up quite a bit on it. I have not yet driven an M3 - but I will soon - I just fixed up a test drive.

My question is - in the light of the 2013 M3 (F80(?) M3) is it worth waiting for the new model, or should I just go in for the E92 M3?

Also - I am planning to get the DCT version. I believe all the kinks in the transmission have been ironed out?

I would also appreciate any post links that would be specifically helpful for newbies like me.

Thanks a lot!

Welcome! You've came to the right place

I guess it really depends -- can you wait another 2-3 years for the new M3/M4 (speculation says M4 will be the coupe version the new M3) to come out?

If not, then get one now and enjoy it That's what I did -- about 3-4 months ago, I said screw it, I'm going to get an M3 now and enjoy it for the next couple of years, and when the new model comes out, I'll hop on that.

Not sure about DCT issues but if the car is under warranty, you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

If you do decide to get an E92 M3, let's go cruising -- seems like you're around the area.

All I knew was I had to have it and the time was right. I didn't even see my car beforehand. I wanted black and the dealer's other lot had it in stock and brought it over. No test drive, no kicking tires and no thinking about it overnight. One of the happiest days in my life, finally getting an M3 20+ years after seeing the first one while in high school.
That's true, when you know you want something, you don't think twice.

That's what I did when I got my 335i prior to the M3, and right AFTER signing the paperwork, the finance adviser made a comparison to dating a girl -- gotta give her a few dates before you commit.

Well, apparently I like to live dangerously. Both with cars and women.

Do you folks use the M3 as a daily car? Or do you have a meeker car for everyday use?

I drive 40 miles everyday to and from work, and I am wondering if I should use the M3, or keep my current car and use that for the everyday commute. I know mileage is an issue, but, if you're buying an M3, the last thing one would care about is mileage I guess.

Any other issues?

Thanks!

theliuman - we can certainly do that once I get mine!

I drive 37 miles one way to work (74 miles round trip) and I use the M3 as a DD. However, during the winter months and/or bad weather I drive a Mini Cooper. The M3 is a great DD even with it's fuel consumption - I find that when I'm driving the Mini I realize how great the M3 is and can't wait for winter to end...

Personally, I'd order an e92 M3 now otherwise I'd be stuck waiting at least four years to buy the F80 M3/4 (definitely skip the first model year) plus miss out on owning the last NA M3 and the awesome V8!

OP,

I am in the same position you are...I drive a Corolla and looking to do a LOT better!. The 2012 E92 (coupe) and E93 (convertible) will be available through next spring. Production ends 6/12. If you want a sedan (E90), your only bet is to buy used or find a new one on a lot somewhere, as factory production of those has ended.

After this spring it will be a while before the next generation M3 is released. There will likely be a 1 year gap with no M3 model (a la 2007). The earliest a 2014 M3 (possibly M4 depending on what they call it) would be available is probably fall 2013.

Hope that helps.

Do you really want the first model year of the new M3/4 or the last model year of the E92? Personally, I'd go for the last model year E92, since it has all of the kinks and problems worked out. Who knows what will crop up with the new M3/4?

As for whether to use it as a DD or not, the community is somewhat split. Some (like me) use it as a DD rain, shine, or blizzard. Others have garage queens. Just depends on what your needs and wants are. But the E9x M3 is a great DD car, gas mileage aside ...

It's never too late, if you like it and want it you should get it

as to 2011 or 2013 ... this has been answered before, I think the general feeling of members was, get the 2011, then if you like the 2013 after about a year on the road and people that drove it have expressed there views perhaps get a 2013 if you like it. I never get a car right after the first generation rolls off the assembly line I wait at least a year.

Do the test drive, see how you like it. Everyone has their own opinion, lol. I'll share mine.. that NA v8 Engine has me drooling... Yes the f80 M3/M4 will be a monster... but personally the sound of that v8 is second to none.... just my 2 cents.

Hey hey palo alto
Firstly, I have no regrets on the car. Given that the new one won't be out for a couple years I'd vote for getting the '12 as well.

40 miles each way is nuts. I don't use the M3 as a DD - so just get comfortable with replacing tires

I would buy it now and wait until BMW fixes all future issues with the next M4 model (maybe 2015?).
In regards to the DCT, I have 10k miles right now and no issues at all.
Good luck with your final decision and welcome to the forum!
Oh, and this car is TOO good of a DD. I want to put it away for the winter, but have not done it yet. In fact, I'm taking a road trip through the Alps this weekend

The F80 M3 is going to be a sedan, and no one knows for sure when it will arrive. While it is likely to make its debut sometime in 2013, it may not hit the market in the US until early 2014. And if you want a coupe you'll be waiting for even longer. The F82 M4 won't debut for an estimated three years or more.

Lease an E92 M3 next year, and then turn it in for a new F82 M4 when it arrives on the market.

Have a great trip be sure to take some pictures ... as for a DD it is my DD whenever the wife needs something I jump and get it from the store ... takes me a while for I always find detours (the long way around) I drive mine year round, in the winter only when the roads are nice and dry.

PS: Es ist Das Fahrvergnügen ... was soll es sonst ein (it is all about the pleasure to drive it what else).

I upgraded from a 2000 Toyota Avalon to my 2011 328i alpine white on red with M sport, fully loaded on a lease.

LOVE IT!!!!!

You will not be disappointed even if you do not get a M3. trust me.

Obviously though, my next step is hopefully M4 when lease is done or used M3 with the V8 engine.

OP, Welcome to the forum. I just joined recently and picked up my M3 E90 last week and love it so far. Just hit 900 miles and I have 300 more miles to go until the scheduled maintanence which is already scheduled for this coming Monday. I came from a 1999 BMW E36 which had 176,000 miles and was my DD for the last 12 years. the M3 is going to be my DD as well but I'm only driving 15/day now for work.

My theory was this, why not drive a nice car and enjoy the commute. If you get the DCT, then you don't have to worry about the clutch pedal.

As for milage, I've been getting about 20 mpg between freeway/local driving here in the East Bay so gas isn't too bad so far.

Get the M3 now and enjoy it. Chances are The next gen M3 will be nice, but do you really want to wait another 3-4 years to find out? If you afford it, GET IT NOW! You won't regret it.

Considering the next M3 will probably be as heavy as an e60, float, and have a looser steering feel; I say get the e92 now! Preferably in AW, Fox Red, and a CF roof After the e90 and e92 M3s, I might have to try AMG or Porshe, something I never thought I'd do. Can't stand the new M division.

Seeing as the f30 is lighter than the e90, I would suggest this prediction is wrong.
