11"335is VS. 09"E92 M3...?
Hi, riders...
I am thinking to buy my new bimmer... It would be either used 335is or 09"M3 (definitely not enough fund for 10 or any newer ![]() Matter of a fact this is a M3 forum...but what would you recommend in terms of my situation...? I live in Socal and over 25. Have much of driving experience (truck, police vehicle, escort vehicle) My Max budget would be 50k ish include Tax... I have already founded right one for 335is, but still looking for the 09 DCT M3 with my budget... What do you recommend? 335is is very tempting me. It has more fuel efficiency than V8 M3, and even more torque at lower RPM. Moreover, it is almost brand new model with DCT(most likely same as M3). Finally, probably little cheaper insurance rate would be. However, you know... M3 is freaking M3...! M3 has been dream car of my entire life. And I probably wouldn't buy these fancy gas eating coupe after I get married and have some children... My last concern is...... Do I even have a chance to get a E92 M3 with DCT and Navi for 50k include tax...? I can see lots of 08" M3 are sold for low 40k (not sure why...maybe b/c warranty and poor 08" iDrive...?) Please feel free to PM me or give any concerns... Thanks !!! |

I hate to echo so many other threads but usually if you can barely afford a used M3 than the answer is not to get an M3. If you get an 09 than what are you doing about warranty in a year or so? Extended warranty is probably 6k and above. No warranty you are looking at some mega expensive repairs possibly.
Gas alone will probably cost you 500 a month EASY. If you are barely affording a used m3 can you pay 500 a month in gas? Then add insurance on top of that. Your choice but sounds like you cannot afford it right now. |

m3 cons are gas mileage and they have infinite pros 335 dunno..

I think the concern here is based off of budget and value for your money.
Obviously M3 > 335is no questions asked. Which should you go for? I don't know. I sorta have the same question for myself. Here is the way how I see it... M3 = V8 = huge plus (probably never will be another M3 w/V8 in the future), so if you want a V8, this is your last chance basically. check out my thread... http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=593156 If you don't race seriously or go to the track etc., but want power, then I say save your money and use it for something else right now that is more valuable (you are a college student... UCLA? judging by your username. I'm sure you need all the money you can save.) and settle for a 335is. That's how I am starting to think now. I might just buy a 335is around June (see my thread and you will understand) and do some mods to make it a little faster and unique (mostly cosmetic). I was thinking and decided my money would be better spent in other investments at the time being for me. I honesty am lost myself. Maybe I should just buy my 328 when the lease is up. Also, I personally would rather have a new car VS old car, but it depends on you. There is about a 100hp diff between M3 and 335is, but from what I hear you can easily make the 335 faster by chipping it and doing mods (which I think totals out to be less than the M3). From financial standpoint, I think 335is wins. Ultimately, it is really up to your personal preference; sacrifice more in spending in other things (clothes, housing, food, etc.) or in your car. And as mentioned above, you have to factor in insurance and gas. I honestly think a 335is is fine for you, although I'm sure you (AND SO DO I!!!) really want the M3 title. It just doesn't work out financially atm. So choose wisely and good luck! Let us know your decision! I'm curious to hear. EDIT: I was thinking about it some more actually and to me if you want to get the 335is, you might as well go for the M3 if you are going to spend all that money. The difference is huge apparently. Personally, I will be in a similar situation as you soon and I don't think it is even worth spending all that money (esp if you don't really have it or have to make great strides to save up for it). Settle for a 328i coupé with M Sport and other nice options (like me) and use it to fuel you to work hard in life and be able to afford an M3 hopefully soon!

If there is any way that you can afford the M3, forget the 335. You can't even compare the cars. The M3 destroys it. Only go 335 if you cannot afford the M. It's not a small difference.. it's an enormous difference in all aspects. Every M owner will tell you this, cause it's true. 335 owners that have never owned an M will have no clue

And maintence is not cheap at all. Brakes, oil change, diff fluid is all a huge cost when warranty is up which would be pretty soon for an 09, atleast a couple years. If you can swing it than by all means go for the m3 but I think some people underestimate the gas alone which is almost the same as a car payment. 500 is on the very low side for the month. Most people who drive it daily and drive it like an m3 is meant to be driven probably spend 600-700 a month on gas. |

But yes OP if you're literally just planning to drive it to and from school, don't get the M3. A car like that (or even a 335, for that matter) deserves to be driven in places like a track or at the very least some fun twisty low-traffic roads, not just gridlocked freeways and city streets. You would be completely wasting the car in those conditions and joining the already infested ranks of SoCal car poseurs.

Get the M3. I just picked up an 09 M3, 13k miles, 2 years of the original warranty with an additional 2 year / 100k mile BMW warranty and BMW extended maintenance for 53k including tax.
A new 2011 335is is more than a used 09 M3 last time I checked. And it will depreciate much quicker than the used M3. Even factoring in the increased gas costs and marginal increase in insurance premiums I still think you would come out ahead with the M3 depending on how many miles you drive. I disagree with the "don't get the M3 if you're not going to race seriously or go to the track comments." The M3 is a luxury sports car, both cars are a far cry from dedicated track cars. You'll have much more fun on the track in something lighter and cheaper. |
