Pulled over in Burbank at midnight...
Cop: Pulled you over because your exhaust is modified. It is illegal to modify your exhaust.
Me: Huh?
Cop: Have a good night sir.

No ticket, or even a real warning! He heard the car revving in a parking lot with some friends after work. I think he was just checking the thing out!

I got pulled over by NYPD somewhere in Brooklyn in evening... 2 officers just pulled over next to me and said,- How do you like the car?

.... and we started chatting about M3, they wanted to know everything... we chatted for a little while, they seemed to really like the M3... one of them said he had BMW 330... then they wished me good luck and good night and left... I forgot to tell them about m3post.com though

I was under the assumption that it is when I got the Tubi, but then there are so many of us and other car drivers, including those coffee can civics, that do this sort of thing. Heaven forbid we want to make our cars look, perform, and sound better. I guess there wasn't enough gang activity last night to keep the Burbank police busy.

totally true. I was filling up at the gas station the other day and some girl asked if my bumpers and exhaust were for sale at the BMW parts department xD (she drives a 128i, no clue if she was a troll or for reals ~_~)

Yes, in most states it is illegal if the sound is above 95db. Most cops cant prove this without measuring the sound but they sure can hassle you and ticket you if they please. Im sure most cases get thrown out though.

Some cars can be illegally too low as well.

^^^That's exactly what I was going to say. If it was illegal to modify your exhaust then what happens if it rusts through and falls off? Can't replace it because then it's modified so I guess you'd have to buy a new car??? And what about all the Harleys running around louder than ANY car I've ever heard? Ever seen a Harley rider pulled over for a loud exhaust?

I can understand the illegal part if you drive around with an x-pipe, but even then, unless the cop takes a deep nose full, it will be hard to prove that on the fly. I have an aftermarket free-flow exhaust, and the Audi R8 up the street is way louder, or all the pick-up trucks in the area for that matter.

If at all, cops should focus on all those honda civics with their glass-pack mufflers.

a few weeks ago a cop gave me a ticket for producing excessive noise with an engine during a rapid acceleration.

bogus municipal rule, I'm definitively appealing that.

BTW, my car is completely stock, I would have loved to see his face with a full gintani race exhaust.
