BMW speedometers are so far off (digital included) that I don't pay attention to them anyway. I use the GPS speed readout on my Escort radar detector.

I don't know why BMW does this. The speedometer on my Jeep is completely accurate.

if i remember correctly, BMW (as well as other companies) err on the side of low readouts due to federal guidelines. BMW programs a 7% buffer between the actual and displayed speeds, so that they don't even come close to breaching the standards and risk legal issues.

think of the issues if they read "accurately", but something got out of calibration and it started showing your speed as slower than you were actually travelling... they'd be facing all sorts of lawsuits...

No. I can estimate my speed on the road using motion parallax and an occasional glance at the speedo (adding 5-7 mph to maintain a speed limit based on built in speedo error) like everyone else with enough time in the car. On the track, I could care less about the speedo and manage shift points through the engine sound and shift indicating lights. Visually--I like the layout. It's simple and purposeful.

With coding you can set the digital speedo to show your true speed, not the "safe" speed that BMW dials in. If you do that it will match any GPS speed.

OP, focus more on how awesome it is that your speedo goes to 200 than that the scale changes. And there are only 2 scales, the one before 80 and the one after. It's not a sliding scale that constantly changes as you go up the speedo. If you look at normal 3ers, they still have 80 at the top of the dial but their speedos only go to 160, so they use the same scale throughout. But for the M3 to accommodate 200, rather than making the gaps between 10mph increments smaller across the board just to make everything in a range where very few cars probably spend very little time, they decided to give you the same better readability in the 0-80 range that normal 3ers get and where you spend the vast majority of your miles. Sheesh.

First world problem?

This makes perfect sense to me. Above 80, who cares about a 2-3 mph variance? If you're not on the Autobahn, you're in ticket territory.

The digital readout is simply better, however, the display for the digital readout should be larger.

Since I used to have a Porsche, I admit I loved the gauge set up more than my M3 set up

But I've gotten used to it

It'll go that fast downhill with a stiff tailwind.

The semi-logarithmic scale is to _help_ you get more accurate speeds, not hinder it.

If you have the 9500ix, you can set it up where it shows your GPS based speed all the time, not just when it detects a radar.

Porsche does it better. Also incredibly annoying that the low fuel indicator shuts down the digital speed reading.
