aftermarket headunit/navigation

one of the biggest compromises I had to make getting my car was that it didn't have idrive i hate driving around without a screen but I've been doing some research recently and it seems you can get a super cheap setup from hong kong for 250/300 bucks that has navigation, bluetooth, dvd, all these bells and whistles. it almost sounds too good to be true and it's even made for the car to fit inside the spacing etc.. does anyone have experience with these things and is this really too good to be true?

if anyone has used these before, do you know if you can still retain steering wheel button features? ie: volume change, station change, bluetooth phone etc..?

Thanks

If you're brave and willing to spend the coin, that'd be pretty awesome.

Alternatively, I think I'd rather get a dashboard mount for my phone and just use that. With Siri and similar hands-free stuff, I can do 95% of what the in-car entertainment systems can.

I'm in a similar situation and didn't get iDrive on my M3, though I didn't want it because I figured it may look a bit dated by now. You can get some decent head units installed where the factory radio is from Alpine / Pioneer with CarPlay for iPhone or Android models too...

Not my photo but this what it looks like on an E46:

Anyone have experience with these? Strongly considering one of them for mine...
