I think the biggest issue of the M3 is that not enough owner is tracking it.

mine had alternator replaced (08 36k miles)... it wasn't broken, but was loud.

Just moved to germany, and patiently awaiting for the car to arrive.. it's already at the port. I already have couple of thoughts on how we are going to spend our reunion.

I've had mine for 1 month ~ 1000 kms. My point of view may be valuable because I can tell you any post-purchase regrets that I've had. I bought an 08 e92 with 35,000 kms (22000 miles), DCT.
I've had no problems (other than the oil cap not being put on correctly by the selling dealership).
Only regret I have is not investing in Shell stock before I took delivery. I averaged about 12 MPG for the first 3 weeks and since I have started to drive it "normally" I am getting about 17-18MPG. I would also suggest not reading about modding because that is a disease with no cure.
I came from a muscle car and the M3 is night and day. Faster, more agile, and just plain more fun (except I miss big, smokey burnouts)
When you get one update us and post some pics!

I've got a 2011 with 24k on the clock and about 25 track days under my belt. This car is amazing!!! My wife DD's it to work (garage 2 garage) and I thrash it on the weekends. IMHO there is not a better all around performer in the planet, end of story. Take the family out for dinners in the city (never valet unless they leave it out front

At the BMW CCA DE I went to, I heard James Clay from Bimmerworld was talking about this very issue on the car he had. They tore the engine down at about 50k miles and the bearings were really worn. He mentioned using an additive to the oil or going with Redline fluids but I need to verify his recommendation.

I must admit, the bearing thing scares me a bit. Maybe I won't do a tune...

Lots of rattles, but they are to be expected on a vert. It's still the best car to drive and I don't fret the small problems. It's like supermodel with freckles.

I have 6k miles on my 2011 with no issues. The paint is not as soft as the ISF's I've had...actually, no rock chips yet and I do a lot of highway driving (knock on wood). The only strange thing I get is after driving her, I park and turn the car off, and for a few seconds with the car off, you can hear something dripping onto something very hot and making a "HISS" sound. It sounds almost like a/c condensation dropping on a hot exhaust pipe and evaporating on contact. Anyone else have this?

That's exactly what it is . And yes, why not route the drain pipe a couple of inches left or right from the exhaust is beyond me, but I plan to do that myself if I ever remember when I have the car lifted.

No issues so far other than having my software reflashed at a service which BMW said was being done on all of them. Other than that the noise it makes over 7500 rpms isn't good for gas mileage.

Issues

Second owner, 2010 E93, got mine with 5,500 miles looking and driving like new until...

Drove it from CO to CA and the tranny failed in Vegas, thnkfully because there's nothing between CO and Vegas late at night; not even cell reception!

BMW replaced the tranny under warranty, though it took three weeks and I'm still fighting with Roadside Assistance on reimbursing me for my expenses during this ordeal - I'm not happy with the way that they have handled this at all.

Now have 15,000 miles on the machine and all is going well. I can't imagine driving another car, my 550i is very dusty and I have to start it every once in awhile to keep the battery charged; it already drained more than once on me. Poor 550i has M3 envy.

I just did a 2800 mile road trip and now have 63K, no problems and I love it. The only issue (at 57K) was incorrect readings on the oil level sensor on my last road trip. It has never burned oil, but on the last trip, the oil level dropped during the first half, I added some oil and it dropped modestly after that. No problem since.

I think it is nearly a super car with daily driver capabilities. A blast to drive and the V8 tone is always a joy. I did buy after market coverage on the mechanicals....., although no problems yet, if they break, it will really be expensive.

I'm driving this Euro Ford Fiesta, with the smallest engine possible! It is just redicules, the thing looses speed going uphill, when you turn ac, open a window (you can probably steer if you stick your hand out of the window).... top end is 100mph, or 105 if you go downhill... I get passed by little fiat's 500, and pretty much anything with an engine... and all these no speed limit autobahns make me very impatient.... but soon!!!

E90 M3 issues

39,000+ mi on my MY2009. Driving since November 2008. Three "serious" repairs:

1) Faulty DSC at 9,000 mi - became a PUMA case - replaced DSC's CPU.
2) Sheared "anti-rattle bracket" (whatever that is) on the front left caliper at 30,000 miles - replaced both front calipers.
2) Idle control valve at 33,000 miles - replaced.

And, of course, gulps oil: I never drive long distance w/o a quart in my trunk.

What are the current issues, complaints or things to watch out of when picking up a used M3 with about 20k miles on it. I'll be getting the a DCT because I can't operate a clutch anymore. (trust me, I'd get a MT if I could)

Thanks guys,
