What IS this doohickey?

Hopped out of the car today and noticed that my gas flap was slightly ajar. When I pressed on it to close, there was resistance. I realized that this little plastic pin was protruding, preventing the flap from closing fully. I pushed it back in and the flap closes normally again, but I'm not sure what it is or why it popped out. Any ideas? In the photo, it's retracted, but it's the small pin on the lower left, inside the recessed area to the left of the gas cap. It sits right below the rubber open/close clicker nipple.

It's the fuel filler lock... when you lock your car it pops out.

yep i had mine malfunction when i first got my car and the mechanism broke so the spring wouldnt engage the door so gas door was open all the time until new part was installed.

Although I've heard it a million times, I've never seen the word "doohickey" used.

I'm a little surprised that people didn't realize what that little guy was. The gas door as a lug that accepts the pin.

But hey, now you know and knowing is half the battle

I learned the hard way not to lock your door right after you get out of it in a gas station.
