As a few have said, I don't think making the switch is something you regret, regardless of what trans you go with.
However, by going to an ///M3 you will be taking on weight, and adding on the fact you are going to a vert, you will be taking on a good deal amount of weight. As far as transmission selection: we all will give you an opinion but bottom line, the DCT is very involving, fast as hell, and by no means a NORMAL auto trans. I think people who drive it expecting a torque converter type of usability are seriously disappointed and annoyed and complain. Those who anticipate it like they would an MT and expect it to behave like one seem to be much happier with it. It definitely has personality, which I find to be VERY fulfilling. PM if you want a lengthy feedback on the car, that I'm sure no one wants to read Cheers, e46e92

Without getting to a 6MT vs DCT debate, I can tell you that the Z4 and M3 are dramatically different rides.
Here are the positives: Z4 is more nimble. M3 is more powerful. Z4 is lighter. M3 has great grunt. Z4 has more lower-end torque. M3 revs higher than Zeus Z4 is more fuel-efficient. M3 has a backseat.

Ditched my 6MT 550i for a DCT M3 coupe. Best decision I ever made. As to the drop top, got to drive around my brother's e93 with DCT over the weekend. Almost made me wish I opted for the vert. . . Almost.

For that reason alone I dislike the regular sound in the Z4

I would say to stay with the manual but to be fair give both a decent test drive.
