DD recommendation
After picking up my new E92, I\'ve realized Im going to need another car for bad weather and to keep the miles down. Any recommendations? I\'d like to spend 10k or lease something for about 200ish. Ive never bought a used car, so im leaning towards the lease. Reliability is key.

Guess I just want to keep it pristine. And I cringe everytime I drop it off at a valet. I drive over 20k miles a year. So im thinking it would be good to split the mileage.

For $10k used Honda Accord would be a great choice. Its front wheel and very reliable, and you can turn around and sell it for nearly what you paid for it down the line.

i remember looking for a car for my girl, we found a nice Sentra for $500 drive off, $186/month
I was seriously considering getting it for myself lol I would save about $200/month on gas alone...but then I'd have to pay $ for insurance, so it would offset the savings, so I didn't do it

I would get a beater, a mid 90's toyota corolla or something. To me, it doesn't make sense to spend $10k to keep your $65k car pristine.

I'm with OP I wouldn't use my M3 as a DD. If I couldn't afford another car, I have an X5 I wouldn't be able to park my car and feel comfortable about it at work and all the damage that inevitably comes with daily use.

Just to provide a counterpoint. I'm in the process of buying an '11 M3 to be my DD. I have a 911 Carrera S that is my weekend car and wanted something more practical and inconspicuous to drive to work. I made a brief and unsuccessful experiment with a lesser car for my DD but missed the Porsche too much while driving the daily driver. So here I am coming back to BMW after letting my last one go in 2003. I think it will be a great blend of fun to drive, precision feel, anonymous styling and (occasional) practicality. I will need snow tires in the winter and somewhat cringe at parking it outside (# cars > # garages in my household) but I will get over it.
Just trying to provide a difterent view. Goodluck with your decision. |

There certainly are two camps when it comes to daily driving an M3. I didn't buy my M3 to look at it. I bought it so that I'd have something to drive every day that I LIKED driving. There is no doubt in my mind that it is significantly cheaper to take the depreciation on my e90 than to buy and maintain a second car. I put about 25k miles on my car every year. It costs me about $7k over two years to put the extra miles on my car.
I'm on my second "beater" M3. And, No; I don't care if the prissies out there would never buy my car used.

NICE. You remind of the Ferrari nut I met a few months ago: 458, GTO, Enzo----all three the highest mileage Ferrari's in the world. The Enzo had like 13k on it. He said he bought them to drive and he said if you need a car to depreciate slowly, you couldn't afford it in the first place. I have to say I few things the way you do. I bought her to drive, not to sit in the garage.
OP: i respect your view as well....if you want a second car think about leasing a new civic, cheap, great has mileage and four doors. Two ideas out there. One, if you are someone that can afford $75,000 cars every 3 or 5 years then drive your M3 as a DD and enjoy it, let it get weathered, worn, dinged, scratched, etc. Then trade and gets something else in 3, 5, 7 years and when it's warrenty is over or 50,000 miles or what ever.
If you're like me and this was a buy of a century (tax free+military discount of $8,000) and had the cash to put down on it and probebly won't be able to buy something of this caliber again if ever. Then do like I do, buy a beater for $5,000 or so. It'll run, drive it on bad weather days, daily to work, don't care what happens to it so you're not stressing everyday you're parked at work or daily rock chips, etc. And drive the M3 on the weekends, hot date, long road trips. Don't have to worry about it everyday, garaged, kept clean and washed only once a week instead of every 3 days due to the weather. I plan on keeping it for many years, probebly for as long as it'll last. Next car is a Ferrari, right? Yeah, well what ever my next car is, I'll still have this M3 looking almost new in 10 years...I hope. So it's all up to you, but trust me, I don't give a shit if I drive a beater, when I have an M3 in my garage. Plus it's kinda a nice treat to drive it on the weekends. Something else to look foreward to. Just my 2Cents. ![]() |

Thanks for the responses and opinions. I think I'll wait a couple months and make a decision before winter hits, which is my biggest concern. Seems like leasing something cheap will cost about the same as a winter tire/rim package plus added depreciation on the M. Whatever I decide buying the M was the right decision, i've got 2500 miles on my car in 3 weeks and I couldn't be happier with it.

It comes down to whether or not you plan to keep the car for a long time (5+ years).
I like the idea of a beater. You can run it up on curbs, park 2" from another car when required, and you can teach your wife how to drive stick on it without worrying about a $1K+ clutch job.

i daily drive a civic... mainly cause i drive over 100 miles a day to and from school and work. TIres on the M are expensive plus it's super low and i have to go over speed bumps everywhere i drive. i just got tired of angling in and out of driveways.
plus my car screams likes the bastard child of a banshee.
