Although name choice is superficial, I do believe that BMW will lose a lot of brand recognition with the M3 crowd. Seems like a very poor marketing decision. As much as I defend BMW these days, I too have to say that the decisions they are making are confusing at best. If anything, make the coupe the M3 and the sedan (with 4 doors) the M4 but even that is dumb IMO.

I'm asking you the same thing. You pointed out they're putting a turbo engine in the car, what's special about that? The 'M3' badge has history, and backing behind it. BMW just wants to charge more and make the car sound more of an 'upscale' car. In the process, they've killed a legend.

Some will say "who cares what it's called, it has 3 turbos, poweeeeeer!". Others will say "who cares what it's called, they ruined the engine"... Unfortunately, there are more people in the first camp.

(I think, that you think, most people want the NA engine to stay) But I think that is just representative of this forum. Anyway, lets say they offered the next gen M3 with the SAME engine as the current car, or a 450hp tri-turbo. Which would you choose? Let's assume they were the same price. Would you buy the NA? How would you feel at the track when the turbos pass you? *edit, I remember you are the guy who traded your M3 for a Mini Cooper S!! (judgement reserved )

![]() Back to your question, I would buy the S65 version of the F30 (if I ever buy another BMW that is). The thing that most people don't understand about track days is that it is not how fast of a car you have, it is about how fast you can drive a given car. So, I really don't care if the guy in triple turbo M3 passes me (worst case, I will have him after 10mins when his turbos over heat )... In regards of my MINI... That's half of the story. That's the DD. The track car will be an Exige (S) But I won't rush it. I will use the MINI as the track car in the mean time and get the Exige in a year or two. Again, the point is to learn how to drive fast.

I am having a lot of difficulties regarding why people want 100s of hp for a DD... What is the point? Get a muscle car if you're (not you in particular) obsessed with power. To me, the point of the M3 was having a very well balanced car with a Ferrari like engine. And the turbo kills that...

Not excited about a tri-turbo 6 cylinder car with 30 more HP than the current amazing S85 N/A V8.
We'll see what happens, but the M brand isn't what it used to be.

The point is you can take your DD to the track for most people.

I frequent the track on a very regular basis with my S/C'd M3. I have seen many Turbo cars at the track with no real issues. Sure they can heat soak, but for most it will be a lapping day not an endurance race so you should be just fine. Lets reserve judgment until we learn more about the next gen M3/M4's powerplant to see what the pros and cons will be.

Yeah but you carry all that power with horrible MPG for 10,000miles a year on the streets. And then do 1,000miles a year at the track... Hence I decided that I'm better of with separate track and DD car. All my preference, obviously.

Sure but buying a dedicated track car and only putting 1000 miles on it in a year sure is going to far exceed the cost of the crappy MPG of the M3. Not everyone has the room for a dedicated track car. Like you said its personal preference.
