Strange sound

EDIT: As of 9/28/11 the dealer believes the top window trim is defective. They ordered the part and should be replacing it today. We'll see if this puts this noise to rest once and for all.

Curious if anyone else has had this sound. My 2011 M3 Sedan is making some sort of squealing noise that inconsistently starts around 76 miles per hour and seems to stop around 80. It sounds like it is emanating from the center of the dash, but it could easily be coming from the engine compartment. It doesn't do it all the time and it is really annoying. I will take it in, but I am concerned that it won't misbehave when trying to show the service dept staff.

Has anyone had this (sorry for the vague description) on their vehicle and had it fixed so I can provide the service guys some direction?

EDIT: Added link to video that I recorded of the sound this week

Nope. Alone in car. Although it did happen with a friend in the car last night so I know I'm not hearing things.

Any chance a friend can video while you are driving? Cellphones don't usually have good enough audio quality.

I've used Video before to explain issues to my Dealership. Keeps them from returning the car with the infamous "No problem found" explanation. They usually keep it until they find the issue.

Good Luck!

I had a similar experience in an M a long time ago. It was the exhaust system touching a metal bracket. In this case it happened at 95 mph and the dealer's reaction was they couldn't drive it that quickly to test it, so I did my own investigations.

Dealer just called and stated that they found a piece of loose window trim that they believe was causing the sound. Asked if I had the window replaced. Nope and I haven't put it through an automatic car wash either. Probably happened when they prepped the car and ran it through their car wash. Anyway, let's hope that's it and I am done.

Hi, checkout my thread and see whether it's the same noise that you are experiencing.

My sound is back. Looks like it wasn't the window trim like the dealer stated. Nothing like driving 4 hours one way down Highway 5 with an intermittent car noise driving you nuts.

Will make an appointment. This time we recorded on my phone so I can let the dealer hear the sound.

mlhj83,
My sound is similar, but far less consistent than hours. Tone and volume both tend to vary and I have had mine come on as low as 65 MPH and stick around into the low 80s. It is intermittent. Sounds like it is coming from the center of the dash.

Any update?

I think I may have the same noise on a CPO vehicle I just acquired with 1700 miles on the odo.
