Can't sell your M3? Raise the price!

I've been watching a certain M3 at a dealer the last few weeks, waiting until the end of the year to make an offer.

What do they do when it still hasn't sold?

Why, they raised their price $5,000!

I dunno, I'm an economics minor, and I don't remember the S&D curves working that way in regards to price.

I'll just skip it.

Better buy it now before price goes up again. Lol. If u really want it offer them invoice or slightly under and if they refuse walk away and wait for the 15 but buy the 15 at a different dealer.

I have to agree that some dealers don't have a clue what is going on in their own business. If they've had this car on their lot for a while, they should be itching to sell it. Each day costs them money (both interest payments and floor space rental). Check out what incentives are going on, figure out what your bottom line is and make the salesman an offer. Until you make a serious offer, you'll never know what they'll sell the car for.

Actually its brilliant, there now sought after because of the E92/M4 gap, so they raise the price then knock the price down when you want to buy it but the price is still higher. Eco 101

It's a used 11' model. Comp and DCT. No nav, which was really hanging me up..until they jacked the price up that high. The car is now seriously overpriced.

You guys laugh but a formula 1 racing inspired V8 in the E92 followed by a 3 series (335is) inspired engine in the F8x which do you think is going to be a sought after car+engine combination in 10-15 years ? Yes better believe it.

Formula 1 racing inspired? That's a new one on me.

The F8x M3 is gonna be a torque monster. That engine pushes the boundaries of reason. 18.1 psi? That sounds good. I'll have that.

I thought it was common knowledge among M3 owners that the S65 NA V8 is formula 1 inspired, I guess some people don't have a clue.
Here is BMW's own words in their original introduction of the S65 V8 power unit for the M3 :
"
Engine block straight from BMW's Formula 1 foundry.
The engine block of the new eight-cylinder comes straight from BMW's light-alloy foundry in Landshut near Munich, where BMW also builds the engine blocks for the Company's Formula 1 racing cars. The cylinder crankcase, in turn, is made of a special aluminium silicon alloy, conventional cylinder liners being replaced by hard silicon crystals. The iron-coated pistons, finally, run directly in the uncoated, honed cylinder bore."

and a bit further:

"The power unit involved is a fast-revving naturally aspirated engine in an uncompromising sports car as in Formula 1, the highest and most challenging level of motorsport, where once again the eight-cylinder sets the standard and marks the latest development in technology. The similarities between the BMW Sauber F1 Team's power unit, on the one hand, and the power unit featured in the new BMW M3, on the other hand, are unmistakable."

and more:

"Taking Formula 1 as a role model and paving the way through BMW M engineering.
The number of cylinders, the high-speed engine concept and the low weight clearly indicates that the engineers responsible for the new eight-cylinder have been inspired by another eight-cylinder - the unique engine featured in the BMW Sauber F1, the engine currently raced by the Team in the highest realm of motorsport. And indeed, the two power units share a number of features not only in their basic technological principles, but also in their production methods, process and materials clearly borne out by the transfer of technology from motorsport to series production."

Now here is what BMW has to say about the S55 engine that will equip the the F8x M4/M3:
"Derived from N55 engine
3,027 cc (compare to 2,979 cc of N55)
stroke over-square compare to stroke under-square of N55."

and for those who do not know the N55 is a regular 3 series 335i engine. how cool is that diluting the M3 with a regular 3 series "derived engine" (BMW's own words).

There you have it. the E92 M3 V8 is a formula one inspired marvel and the coming F8x M4/M4 engine is derived from a lower mass produced commercial standard series 3 series car (335i).

Torque is not the answer for driving enjoyment. Fast revving and throttle response rule !!! (and that engine sound). Turbo lag in daily driving (not spinning that turbine on a track) and low revving suck.

OP, If you decide you want to purchase that car, I'd go in and offer what you want to pay for it. I'd politely point out that you noticed they raised the price recently and that hasn't helped sell it. I'd try not to come off as condescending or snarky since its their car and can do whatever they want. It will put you in a good situation because it should be very easy to walk away if they don't hit your price point.

This is a common tactic. So let's say bottom line is 45k, and priced at 47k. Dealer gets a few offers at 5k less and does not sell. Raises price to 52k, and now a 5k off offer is a sale. It is sort of like suit dealers. They says buy an $800 suit and get 3 free. What you are actually buying is 4 $200 suits.

Yes, whenever you need accurate information about something, the best and most objective and reliable source of that info is the manufacturer's own marketing flyers.

BTW, wouldn't it actually be a bad thing for the S65 engine to be associated with BMW's Formula 1 campaign, considering that stint in F1 royally sucked major ass?

I used to buy and sell a few cars on craigslist back in the day..
When id over price them they would sell way faster for some reason lol. A little more haggle room for the buyer for his/hers sense of accomplishment lol

Agreed but he compared both engines with manufacturers marketing campaign.

Like it or not but s65 and s85 were special. I have a s63 also and they truly have done a bang up job with it but it doesn't feel as special.

With that said I probably will end up ordering the new M4. I like it as a total package.
