How cold outside to stop using R-comps?

Looking for advice from some of the usual track junkies...I plan on doing a couple more HPDE events into the fall, where ambient temps here in the Northeast can get into the 50s or even 40s. (Watkins Glen in late September and NJMP in late October.)

At what point should I no longer run my Nitto NT01s on track? Are you still able to get them up to temperature in the cold? I'd imagine at some point as the outside temperature falls they get hard and lose grip, so I'll just run my street tires instead, but I'm not sure at what temperature to worry about this. Thanks in advance.

As long as it is not freezing (and I doubt that they'd let people on the track if it was freezing), you can use r-compounds if you can put heat into them. I haven't found it to be a problem. You just need to be patient and corner slowly and try to warm them up by accelerating and braking on the straights. September and October are not prolematic in the NE in general. You might also need to be careful with some parts of the track (tarmac) being warmer and colder than others.

I have run down as low as 0c(32f) on Hoosiers with no great issues.Just need a few laps to get some heat in the tires.My Nt05's seem to need about 5c before they start to work.I have done lots of bike track days when it is cold and you just need a longer warm up time to get some grip.I find my track tires are not good when there is snow or ice on the ground though

Depends on the tire. I've run Nittos and Toyos with temps in the mid-teens with good results, but I've had trouble getting Hankooks and Michelin PSCs up to temp in the 40s in a 30 minute session. Old, cold PSCs and a cold morning put me into the wall in 2004. Lesson Learned.

You're not the first person to say that about PSCs.

Someone else here put it into the blue armco at WGI on cold PSCs. So remember to get up to speed carefully on cold days.

Personally, I've driven on them year round in California. They are noticeably weak when it's cold, though.
